AARP Foundation Tax-Aide - Free Tax Preparation Services

Tax-Aide provides free tax preparation services at established sites, including electronic filing of returns, usually from early February to the last week of the IRS filing deadline.  AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides tax assistance to anyone with a focus on taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income.  There is no requirement to be an AARP member. Each site is staffed by volunteers who are certified by the IRS. They will prepare federal and Virginia state returns that fall within the scope of our volunteer training, including most items on Form 1040.   Click here for the scope of our services

Important Information About Filing Your 2025 Tax Return

Taxpayers will have until Tuesday, April 15, 2026 to file their Federal 2025 return.

Below are tips from tax experts and the IRS on how to get a tax refund ASAP:

  • File electronically.

  • Get your refund via direct deposit.

  • Don't guesstimate.

  • Save all IRS letters.

  • File early  (Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Child Tax Credit (CTC) will not be issued before mid-February.)

  • Include your Identity Protection (IP)  PIN number

    • If you used one last year, you should have received a new PIN from the IRS for use this year.

      • Did the IRS mail you form CP01A?  To view an example of CP01A  click-->CPO1A Example

    • If you file your return without your IRS-assigned IP PIN:

      • The IRS will reject your electronic return, and you won't be able to e-file

      • The IRS will subject your paper return to additional screenings to validate your identity, delaying any refund you may be due.
