Outside the Bataclan on a brisk and wet October morning there is little about the building that indicates what took place here almost a year ago. Currently closed and under refurbishment, the building is wrapped in metal sheets that are scribbled in messy graffiti. People walk past, joggers jog, cars drive by, scooters whizz past, a homeless man with a thick white beard flashed with nicotine yellow plunders the bins for salvageable foods and the washing machines in the neighbouring laundrette spin and continue their cycles. Life moves on.

Two people stop in front of me for a moment and stare, soaking it in in quiet reflection as though they are paying tribute at a graveside. They soon pull out laminate wallets stuffed with map print outs and it becomes clear they are essentially sightseers, turning the place into a grim tourist attraction for a fractured world. I realise I am fundamentally doing the same and I leave.

Adrien Durand of BVO, who began making music as Les Aeroplanes around 7 years ago, tells a story of an ever-changing neighbourhood as we sit in his newly refurbished studio filled with glorious and pristine analogue equipment.

The group are keen to now do more pre-sale ticket shows to expand the diversity of their audience, which in the wake of their debut album has no doubt expanded further through their widespread variety of guests, such as the Syrian dabke player Rizan Said, the Algerian singer Rachid Taha, the Turkish composer Cem Yildiz (also a member of Insanlar) and various other musicians. The resulting collaborations on the debut lead to an album that hums with the vibrancy and diversity of the city streets you walk around near their studio and sparks with the life and energy of the nightlife they are so deeply immersed in. For Acid Arab, and everyone else I speak to whilst here, the sound and identity of France and Paris is not captured and projected in the rising rhetoric of the likes of the National Front but in the multicultural heart of the place that beats louder and funkier than the drum of hate and intolerance.

Dear yoga teacher friends, i really love being taught by other teachers. Recently, during some of these lovely yoga jaunts, i have been jolted off my otherwise blissful yoga experience with really loud music, even during the very last part of the class--sivasana (deep relaxation). Wow! I used to be a high impact aerobics instructor so i understand the importance of music for revving up the fun. Music can motivate people to go harder, faster and really rock! Most traditional yoga schools, however, don't use music. The rhythmic quality of breath, particularly the group synchronized breathing, is quite helpful to the practice. Here in North America, where asana (poses) is the most important part of the practice for most studios, music keeps people going, especially in 'power' yoga classes.

The siren marked the start of Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. I was trying hard to think of all those who died in the Holocaust as the loud memorial siren drowned out the Arabic music. I was trying to force myself to feel the pain that my own people, the Jewish people, had endured.

Growing up in Israel, I learned about the horrific mass murder of one-third of the Jewish people. Hearing stories from Holocaust survivors, and from my friends whose grandparents survived, was always hard. Each year during Yom Hashoah, the shops in Israel close early, they show Holocaust movies on television and a siren commands the attention of all Israelis, compelling us to stop for a minute of silence and remember what happened to us.

When these survivors and refugees arrived in Israel, they wanted to grow out of that darkness but still remember what happened to them. The biggest Holocaust museum in the world, Yad Vashem, documented everything that happened to the Jews of Europe in a professional yet emotional way.

The persecution and suffering of Mizrahim, never mind the expulsion of 850,00 Mizrahim from the Arab countries of their birth after the creation of Israel, is never recognized with the wail of a siren.

So while Yad Vashem reports the number of Tunisian Jews killed in the Holocaust at 50, Dr. Victor Hayoun, the author of a study about Tunisian Jews in the Holocaust, argued in 2017 that the number is closer to 700.

I am in pain for the 6 million Jews who were brutally murdered by Nazis and their collaborators. A third of the whole Jewish people was erased. But growing up, being told to feel and connect to this collective trauma that I never felt fully connected to was almost impossible.

Until recently, the traumas of the Mizrahi community were never acknowledged fully and dismissed as irrelevant. The stories of North African Jews in the Holocaust were never fully told or acknowledged. Mizrahim were not allowed to truly connect to the Holocaust, an Ashkenazi experience that we were not supposed to be a part of.

I hope that one day Mizrahi children in Israel and around the world will learn about our trauma and what happened to our community during the Holocaust. That they will find a place to deal with our tragic memory of our community and our history. I hope they are taught about the Vichy regime in North Africa, the Nazi-led Free Arabian Legions and how the long arm of the Third Reich reached the Middle East.

Learning these stories will not diminish the memory of the Holocaust. It is only when Mizrahim are invited to fully be a part of the communal mourning, and only when we are heard, that all Jews will be able to truly mourn together.

Arabfunny is a meme aesthetic that was started in 2018 on the r/Arabfunny subreddit. It's based around poorly edited ironic memes that are meant to be an exaggerated parody of Arabic social media posts on places like Facebook and WhatsApp. Arabfunny memes are usually non-nonsensical and bizarre with a lot of fast-paced flashing images, GIFs, memes, and text flying around with barely any pauses, with audio including loud music and sound effects to create a stimulus overload for the viewer. We grab a Careem (Middle East subsidiary of Uber) and make our way to Ainkawa, a mostly Christian district of Erbil in the north. A lot of gaudy looking restaurants with big, white Toyota Land Cruisers parked outside. We end up in a smoky caf full of men smoking shisha and drinking tea.

Now we are in 2022 and it seems like Erbil is on the upswing. That, plus very high oil prices for this crude producing region means a cold winter is turning into a warm spring and hopefully a fruitful summer.

Erbil is a city in development. Everything changed since the last time I was here. New high rises, plenty of restaurants and new roads. It has expanded by leaps and bounds, all centered around the historic center of Erbil, the citadel, which they claim to be the site that has longest been occupied by humans in history. Its height above the land that surrounds it is a testament to the millenniums of inhabitants building on top of the ruins of the last.

Mitch offers modern music lessons and is noticing a mix of expats and locals starting to populate his schedule. It means there is interest in music, which means there is undiscovered talent here. This statement is confirmed with my next meeting.

Prince Slomo makes beats that make you want to cruise down the highway to a setting sun. He comes from humble origins, his family having immigrated to Canada from Iraq. Today he has returned to his home country and is running his studio from Erbil.

Slomo tells us there are Kurdish artists in the city that are breaking the norms of traditional Kurdish or Arabic music by introducing Western elements. Abba Karib, an artist he records for has some pretty nice tracks out there working with reggaeton influences.
