Dual Immersion

Our Golden Bell award winning program provides families with an opportunity to build literacy in two languages. Parents select the Dual Language Program to stimulate their child’s cognitive, social, and linguistic development. It prepares children with advantages to compete for future careers. Dual Language Education provides children with the skills needed to live and work in a multicultural and global economy.

Our current program features kindergarten and first grade students only. A second Kindergarten class and one second grade class will be added. Our 2018 and 2019 school year classes are currently filled. You can contact the office for information regarding our wait list process.

We only enroll student into Dual Immersion at the start of Kindergarten. We maintain a wait list for students for the Kindergarten through first trimester of first grade. After that, only students who come from an approved Dual Immersion Program and/or students who are native Spanish speakers are allowed into the program and only if they show target language fluency.

What does a Dual Language Program Offer?

This unique program offers English and Spanish speaking students the opportunity to learn and excel in two languages, English and Spanish. Students in a Dual Language Program are taught in the 90/10 model. Students in kindergarten receive 90% of their instruction in Spanish and 10% in English. Each year, English is gradually increased into the program. By 5th grade, instructional time will be 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. Students at this time will develop fluency in both languages.

The video on the left provides an insight of what the teachers of Los Altos journey to be a biligual teacher started and the process of teaching at Los Altos Elementary. Also, they give information about the curriculum and how they support families who need extra help which is spoken in Spanish.
