Aston University is often being classified as a 'Plate Glass' University, however, it is not, though the timing of Aston being granted the Royal Charter (aka granted University status) does fit in the time frame.
In 1875, we were established as a School of Metallurgy at the Birmingham and Midland Institute. In order to reflect its evolving approach to teaching technology, the Birmingham Municipal Technical School broke away from the Institute in 1895 and changed its name to the Birmingham Central Technical College in 1927. Construction of the Main Building at Gosta Green started in 1951, and the Technical College was renamed the College of Technology, Birmingham. It opened in 1955. It was the first prestigious college of advanced technology to be designated in 1956. On April 22, 1966, we received our Royal Charter and became the University of Aston in Birmingham. In 1997, we changed our name to the name it's currently being known : Aston University
