Using the Lord Of The Rings movie license, The Battle for Middle-earth is a Real-Time Strategy game based upon both the renown literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and the film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. Players are given control of enormous armies in the many of the epic battles depicted in the film. From waging all-out combat among the vast forces of good and evil to controlling your favorite heroes and characters to managing the troops and resources of your side, the fate of a living, breathing Middle-earth is in the player's hands.

The game is for some reason not able to locate the maps in your roaming folder when they`re in a folder in another folder. When you downloaded the map pack, I`ll bet all your maps are in separate folders inside of the downloaded map pack folder. So if you simply move all the separate map folders from your map pack folder and directly into the "Maps" folder in the "My The Lord of the Rings, The Rise of the Witch-king Files" or "My Battle for Middle-earth™ II Files", depending on which version of the game you're running, the map transfer will finally work! My friend and I both did this with similar maps and a map transfer wasn`t even necessary, as it should be when both parties have the same map. Simply put, you`re deleting the downloaded map pack folder and moving its contents directly into the" Maps" folder in your roaming folder. It really is a silly little thing.

In ancient Germanic mythology, the world of Men is known by several names. The Old English middangeard descends from an earlier Germanic word and so has cognates such as the Old Norse Migarr from Norse mythology, transliterated to modern English as Midgard. The original meaning of the second element, from proto-Germanic gardaz, was "enclosure", cognate with English "yard"; middangeard was assimilated by folk etymology to "middle earth".[T 4][2] Middle-earth was at the centre of nine worlds in Norse mythology, and of three worlds (with heaven above, hell below) in the later Christian version.[1]

Tolkien's biographer Humphrey Carpenter states that Tolkien's Middle-earth is the known world, "recalling the Norse Midgard and the equivalent words in early English", noting that Tolkien made it clear that this was "our world ... in a purely imaginary ... period of antiquity".[6] Tolkien explained in a letter to his publisher that it "is just a use of Middle English middle-erde (or erthe), altered from Old English Middangeard: the name for the inhabited lands of men 'between the seas'."[T 4] There are allusions to a similarly- or identically-named world in the work of other writers both before and after him. William Morris's 1870 translation of the Volsung Saga calls the world "Midgard".[7] The poem "The Gray Magician" (1918) by Margaret Widdemer says: "I was living very merrily on Middle Earth / As merry as a maid may be / Till the Gray Magician came down along the road / And flung his cobweb cloak on me..."[8] C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy calls the home planet "Middle-earth" and specifically references Tolkien's legendarium.[9]

Tolkien prepared several maps of Middle-earth. Some were published in his lifetime. The main maps are those published in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, and Unfinished Tales, and appear as foldouts or illustrations. Tolkien insisted that maps be included in the book for the benefit of readers, despite the expense involved.[T 10] The definitive and iconic map of Middle-earth was published in The Lord of the Rings.[T 11] It was refined with Tolkien's approval by the illustrator Pauline Baynes, using Tolkien's detailed annotations, with vignette images and larger paintings at top and bottom, into a stand-alone poster, "A Map of Middle-earth".[10]

Numerous computer and video games have been inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's works set in Middle-earth. Titles have been produced by studios such as Electronic Arts, Vivendi Games, Melbourne House, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.[35][36]Aside from officially licensed games, many Tolkien-inspired mods, custom maps and total conversions have been made for many games, such as Warcraft III, Minecraft,[37] Rome: Total War, Medieval II: Total War, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. In addition, there are many text-based MMORPGs (known as MU*s) based on Middle-earth. The oldest of these dates back to 1991, and was known as Middle-earth MUD, run by using LPMUD.[38] After the Middle-earth MUD ended in 1992, it was followed by Elendor[39] and MUME.[40]

In addition to an epic tabletop release, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth arrives on MTG Arena June 20! From the One Ring and the temptation it offers to the story beats and characters we love in The Lord of the Rings, this release brings the same tabletop-Magic-meets-Middle-earth adventure to your PC and mobile phone.

Middle Earth 1.03 (update 1/4/02)AuthorFile DescriptionNewsboy555Posted on 09/19/01 @ 12:00 AM (updated 02/05/02)File DetailsRuleset:TS Standard RulesMap Size:X-LargePlayable Races:SomeSurface Levels:3Difficulty:NormalThis is my Middle Earth map, straight from the book LotR. I have tried long and hard to get the desired effect, and quite frankly (within the confines of the AoW editor), I think I did a one-up job. So check it out, play it, could also be used for a MP map I guess. No password, the races are: Halfling (playable), Elves (playable), Highmen (playable), Humans (I think playable), and Orcs, Goblins, Undead, Dwarves, and the Azracs to represent the Easterlings and Haradrim.

Please comment on this map, if you like it tell me, if you hate it, tell (but please keep it reasonable). I have laboured long and hard to make this map as close as possible to LotR, but not everything is possible, so tell me where I can improve and I'll definitely improve it...AuthorComments & Reviews ( All | Comments Only | Reviews Only )SpasmarodPosted on 09/23/01 @ 12:00 AMRating4.2BreakdownPlayability4.0Balance4.0Creativity4.0Map Design5.0Story/Instructions4.0Wow! this is definitely the most accurate and good looking of the lotr maps i have seen, although perhaps jasons Reign of terror map just gets it for playability

keep up the good work!Galahad_2Posted on 11/04/01 @ 12:00 AMRating4.4BreakdownPlayability4.0Balance4.0Creativity5.0Map Design4.0Story/Instructions5.0This is a nice map and shows great attention to capturing many small details and minor characters in Lord of the Rings. I know that it is a challenge to capture a novel in an AOW scenario; I did the Scouring of the Shire map. I have a few suggestions though:

1. Give Frodo the One Ring to use. The basic problem with a LOTR scenario in AOW is that the Ringbearer's quest to destroy the ring is impossible to do in the game's mechanics because there is no stealth and evasion, nor can victory be based on reaching a certain hex. Instead, the game becomes a war of attrition. The West's hope lie not in destruction of the Ring, but rather in development of Leprechauns and Air Galleys. The scenario would make more sense and also be more play-balanced if we assume that Frodo claimed the Ring as his own and challenged Sauron. Give the One Ring powers of invisibility, large pluses to every attribute, etc. It would also make the game more interesting and true to the novel, as other players would try to kill Frodo (a fairly weak hero) to get this powerful magic item from him.

2. The cities should be far fewer and also much smaller; I would give each side just a couple of Level one cities, and only some major places such as Minas Tirith and Isengard being level 2 or 3 cities. This is because:

a. It will put more emphasis on the starting units and the heroes, and less on production and city upgrades.

b. The large cities will eventually be used for production of Level 3 and 4 units, which are mostly un-Tolkien-like things such as Air Galleys.

c. The cities are out of scale compared to the distances between cities.

d. I think that some of your cities are actually mentioned in LOTR just as wilderness areas or watchtowers or other places not as cities, and some I can't remember being mentioned at all.

e. Fewer cities would make the game shorter, simpler, and more playable.

3. Likewise, the map would be better without such a lot of Power Nodes. Magic in LOTR should be rare and special. Also, most of these power nodes are not even vaguely mentioned in the novel.TheShadowDawnPosted on 12/04/01 @ 12:00 AMRating4.0BreakdownPlayability3.0Balance4.0Creativity5.0Map Design5.0Story/Instructions3.0I found the way this map recreated the world of Tolkien singularly impressive, it was a greatly enjoyable map to play; the effort to detail was interesting. I enjoyed playing this map a great deal. Good work.XenobeaPosted on 04/09/02 @ 12:00 AMRating4.0BreakdownPlayability5.0Balance3.0Creativity4.0Map Design5.0Story/Instructions3.0This map was very fun to play. I couldn't stop. The map is also absolutely gorgeous.

I gave this map a lower rating for balance because of the unavailability of spells to halflings, dwarves, and goblins. Ordinarily I would consider this situation grossly unfair, but I understand the reasons behind it.

Creativity is hard to judge on a map not based on original ideas. However, I think the way the stories were implemented on this map was creative, and I couldn't wait to see what I'd find next when I was playing it.

While the map was scrupulously attentive to the details in the books, the story might have been incorporated better into the map design using background, pop-ups, and signs.

Overall a very nice map though. :-)Tekk ZeroPosted on 04/21/02 @ 12:00 AMRating4.4BreakdownPlayability3.0Balance4.0Creativity5.0Map Design5.0Story/Instructions5.0This map is probably the most accurate re-creation for Lord of the Rings made of all the AOW scenarios. However, with the intent of the map to be a very accurate interpretation of Lord of the Rings, much of the gameplay has been dulled down. It is fun to play around, but is probably pretty easy for the experienced player.Imperator JRPosted on 08/12/05 @ 10:01 AMRating5.0BreakdownPlayability5.0Balance5.0Creativity5.0Map Design5.0Story/Instructions5.0Playability: 5

a downloadmustKaucukovnikPosted on 12/19/12 @ 12:23 PMI just had a very silly moment on this map. I was expanding my dwarven empire, a friend of everyone but the Goblins. Whom I drove in terror through the mines, of course. On the dawning of 27th day a visionary quick battle window showed that Aragorn was slain by hobbit slingers. Did I mess up the diplomacy by playing the Dwarves? They are not listed as playable, but they aren't locked either.

Well, I guess I'll start over, this would rewrite the history too early, I'm afraid... I'll return for a review when I play some more. Could try the Highmen now! :D
