Merry Clearcuts and a Fiery New Year from Boulder County!
The Issue
The Middle Boulder Creek Fuels Reduction Partnership Project is one of many projects threatening our local ecosystems. Despite Boulder County's own 2022 study that said "fuel" (ie. trees and debris on the forest floor) reduction projects were ineffective at mitigating wildfire risk, the County is using millions in our taxpayer dollar to cut down thousands of acres of public lands.
Though they claim the goal of protecting local property from wildfires, Boulder County Parks & Open Space and the nonprofit partners pushing false "science" are complicit in Trump's agenda. The "Big Beautiful Bill" mandates a massive increase in logging on public lands and long-term logging contracts, effectively pushing for and privatizing the logging of public lands. This project uses the language of climate resiliency to push for decimating huge swaths of public land without public input. Additionally, the language of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is being coopted so that the County can claim they are using "indigenous practices," both without consulting any local indigenous nations or using actual indigenous practices.
This project, like all large-scale logging projects, will result in consequences such as...
Creating ideal conditions for fast-burning grass and brush fires
Compacting soil
Limiting root growth
Increasing pollution
Degrading and fragmenting habitats
Increasing of invasive plants
Wasting public resources
Increasing noise
Creating a need for consistent maintenance
Destroying complex habitats
Inhibiting the natural evolution of wildlife
Threatening Boulder County species of concern
The Lorax Forest Defenders believe that this project is just the beginning. Boulder County is likely testing the waters to see what their constituents are willing to let slide. We can't let them destroy our public lands.
