In this website you explore a vintage computer with Windows95 installed. At first glance, the computer belongs to a family, and is mainly used by the father, Steve Thompson. Through further digging and solving various puzzles and codes, you discover a big secret that he kept hidden his whole life.
Made with HTML/CSS, Bootstrap, JQuery, JavaScript, and hosted on GitHub, I made this website to be a retro immersive video game set in the late 1990s.
Added more icons to the side
Started code for buttons and puzzles
Created windows that can be opened for the inbox and recycling icons
Made the windows click and dragable
Started coding the internal puzzles
My final goal for this project is to make a video game in the form of a website that looks like an old desktop. I'm hoping to go into web development after I graduate, so I knew my final project should involve me building a website somehow. Additionally, I wanted to tell a story about an individual who is different than they first seem. I think technology makes it very easy for us to judge people based on first impressions, but all humans are complex and we almost never see the whole story. Thats why I want this game to show how we should never rely on first impressions when first meeting someone and to always look further than what's in front of us, especially when using any technology.
The aesthetic I want for this video game is early 90s retro technology. On this website, I want to be able to explore different files, applications, folders, etc. to find information about the owner of the computer. It should make use of old pixelated icons, vintage fonts, and nostalgic wallpapers. I've always loved this old retro vibe and I think it comes from growing up watching old 90s shows with this technology and seeing a rise in vintage aesthetics as of late.
This game simulates AOL messenger that was used in the 90s. In this game, you read and send messages to the different characters to progress the story. This is similar to my work because I want to use the same 90s computer aesthetic in my game.
This game allows the user to go through someone’s phone that they found. It’s a mystery game that explores who the original owner is with a plot twist at the end. My game is heavily based on this, but instead of a phone it would be an old computer. I would want to keep the same mystery concept with a possible plot twist at the end.
This website is a portfolio that was made that has the same aesthetic I’m going for. It operates like a Windows 95 computer and has different folders and links you can click on. While this isn’t a game, it’s the same style I want to make my game in and in website form.
Finish research on old windows machines
Find people who sell old windows machines and learn about the places and people they come from
Try to use them and see how they work/operate/get ideas for different sounds and applications used on them
Finalize game/website title
Start sketching out website visuals
Start building storyline for the user of the game
Sketch out what the main website will look like including wallpaper and various buttons
Plan out main puzzles and action items
Start to code website
Have the background and the first couple of buttons coded on the website
Have the full story written with the ways to communicate this to the user
Have flow charts for how each puzzle should work and sketches of what needs to be coded for them
Start making all of the icons needed for buttons and applications
Continue to code the game
Start coding one or two of the puzzles
Finalize how the game will be played and have a rough prototype of one puzzle
Fix any details that might not have made sense at this point
Think about if there’s any aspects of the game that don’t make sense or should be changed to better fit original proposal
Finish coding rough prototype of all puzzles
The game should be somewhat playable at this point
Visuals might still be rough, but action items should be more or less complete
Start having people test play the game to find any bugs or issues that need to be fixed
Finish coding all visuals and fix any bugs
Add any finishing details to the visuals and puzzles of the game
Make sure to fix any bugs brought up in the play tests
Finish visuals so that the game looks like and sounds like an old windows machine
