LookAway ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how our mobile application (the "App") handles your information and the permissions required to function.
By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information.
LookAway is designed as a privacy-first utility. All processing related to screen time tracking and app detection happens locally on your device. We do not have servers, and we do not transmit your usage data to the cloud or third parties.
To provide its core functionality (the 20-20-20 rule enforcement), LookAway requires specific Android permissions. Here is a breakdown of what we request and why:
Why we need it: This permission allows LookAway to detect which application is currently running in the foreground.
How we use it: We use this strictly to enable the "Smart Pause" feature. If you are using a video player (like Netflix or YouTube) or a video conferencing app, LookAway detects this and automatically pauses the timer to prevent interrupting your activity.
Privacy Assurance: This data is processed instantaneously and locally on your device. We do not store a history of the apps you use, nor do we send this information to anyone.
Why we need it: This permission allows LookAway to draw the "Break Screen" (the dark overlay) on top of other apps.
How we use it: When your 20-minute timer finishes, we display a semi-transparent dark layer to dim your screen, encouraging you to look away and rest your eyes.
Why we need it: To keep the timer running reliably in the background, Android requires us to run a "Foreground Service," which must display a persistent notification.
How we use it: We show a notification in your status bar to let you know the timer is active. This notification also provides a quick way to "Stop" the service.
Why we need it: To provide haptic feedback.
How we use it: We vibrate your device gently to signal the start and end of a break, allowing you to follow the 20-20-20 rule without needing to look at the screen.
Since we do not collect personal data, we do not retain any personal data.
App Settings & Stats: Your preferences (e.g., timer active state) and simple statistics (e.g., "Breaks Today" count) are stored locally on your device in shared preferences. You can clear this data at any time by clearing the App Data in your Android Settings.
Our App does not address anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13.
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. Thus, you are advised to review this page periodically for any changes. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
