American Rose Trials for Sustainability

Dr. David Zlesak

Roses are a beautiful and beloved flower, but they are sometimes feared as hard to keep healthy, and their ability to survive MN winters can be dubious. Learn about a program that scientifically identifies superior roses for a specific region, accompanied by wonderful photographs.

The American Rose Trials for Sustainability® aims to find roses you can trust to do well.  It is a national trialing program that tests and awards strong-performing roses on a regional basis. Roses are trialed for two years using low input conditions and proven scientific methodology and evaluation criteria. David will share the background and current activities of the program and highlight recent winning roses for our region.

Dr. David Zlesak is a Professor of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He has been breeding landscape plants, including roses, for greater disease resistance and adaptability since 1984. He helped start the American Rose Trials for Sustainability® in 2012 and is excited about the growing impact the program is having.

Making something from nothing:  stories about beans, sorghum and hemp

Dr. Tom Michaels

Dr. Michaels is Professor of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota. He teaches courses about sustainable agriculture and food systems and has authored a textbook called The Science of Plants.  His research focuses on plant breeding and genetics and just about any other excuse to work with plants that gets him out of the office and into the greenhouse and field.
