Imagine an alien world not unlike our own: one of temperate climates, tranquil grasslands and vast seas. Two moons circle the clear skies, the fresh winds blow and the warm sun shines down from above.
But this world is not as natural as it seems: it is an unfinished creation of humanity. There are no higher plants other than grasses, which stretch in vast fields from pole to pole. A myriad of invertebrates scurry through the soil and paddle through the seas, carrying out their eternal tasks that keep the ecosystem functioning. But only two species of vertebrate call this place home: in the seas swim the Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus. And on the land is a species that was never intended to be part of this world: the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus.
The human caretakers are gone, never to interact with the planet again, and so the living creatures of this abandoned creation are left to their own destinies. Over the course of a billion years the forces of evolution will inexorably transform every organism on the planet into innumerable and wonderful forms, each carving out their own niche in an ever-changing world. Life and death, radiations and extinctions, lineages and individuals; all threads in a great tapestry that records the history of this little planet somewhere in the forgotten depths of space.
Welcome to Loki, the World of Rats.
Loki, The World of Rats is an ongoing speculative evolution project with updates happening whenever they're ready. The project aims to be scientifically accurate as much as possible; although a lot of research is carried out of course one person cannot know everything. In the event of any spotted errors please do flag them up.
Feedback, enquiries and art submissions are all gratefully received.
Special thanks go to the legendary Dougal Dixon (the father of spec evo) and the idiots on /se/, who motivated/shouted at me until I wrote something.
And of course, to all the rats I have loved and lost along the way. Such tiny creatures leave enormous pawprints on your heart.
