In this Baltimore Sun Crimebeat blogpost on June 1, 2011 we learn that a woman's body was found in Leakin Park in the early evening of May 29, 2011. I will reprint exactly what the post said, but please note the address is incorrect. According to a corrected police report Ms. Smyth was found near 4300 Windsor Mill Road, which would be in the vicinity of the Gwynns Falls Trail parking lot:
City police today are identifying the woman found shot to death in Leakin Park on Sunday night. Lois Smyth, 40, who was also known as Lois Vance, was found by a jogger in the 3900 block of Windsor Mill Road, between the Gwynns Falls Trail and a stream, police say. Smyth was from the 400 block of W. Maple Road in Linthicum, and had no criminal record.Police are interviewing people of interest and have a motive, though it was not disclosed for investigative reasons. According to The Sun's homicide map, Smyth is the fifth female killed in Baltimore this year, and just the second white victim out of 83 victims.
Hometown Annapolis reports that Ms. Smyth was shot once in the head and the police are unclear whether she was killed in the park or her body was brought there. They also say that Ms. Smyth graduated from Old Mill High School in 1989.
Update 06/16/2011 Killer charged. According to this post in the Baltimore Sun Crime Blog
Kenneth Brunetti
Baltimore police have made an arrest in the fatal shooting of a 40-year-old Linthicum woman who was found dead in Leakin Park last month, charging her boyfriend with first degree murder of May 29. Records show that police believe Smyth was "lured to the Gwynns Falls Trail" and down a wooded path, where she was shot in the head. Police determined through phone records that Lois Smyth had left her home to meet up with boyfriend Kenneth Brunetti and attend a picnic on the afternoon.
Records show Brunetti used Smyth's bank card to withdraw $700 from her bank, and took her car. He was picked up June 1 on a violation of probation warrant stemming from a 2004 armed carjacking conviction (he received 20 years in prison, with 11 years suspended in that case), and was served with the murder warrant early this morning. Brunetti was being held without bail. Brunetti has a long record of crimes stretching back to 1989, in Baltimore County, Howard County and Anne Arundel County.
One may click on this link for Ken Brunetti's Facebook Page. He says he is laid back and stress free. He has some additional pics there.
Maryland Criminal History of Kenneth Todd Brunetti, born 05/30/1971
A quick check of the case search shows a Lois Jean Smith who lived in the 400 block of West Maple Road in Linthicum recently had some traffic violations including a DUI and driving on a suspended license in 2010. She was waiting to go to trail in July for some more traffic violations stemming from March of 2011 including driving on a suspended license again. A Lois Vance has been sued 3 times in civil court. There was no listing for charges for controlled substance violations or violence.
According to this article in the Maryland Gazette, "Ms. Smyth helped found the East Coast Majestic cheerleading organization and was a board member at the Andover Apaches youth athletic league" and "Smyth left behind daughters Erin and Shelby Morman".
I have located a facebook page for a Lois Smyth-Lois Vance.
Update 01/03/2013 Kenneth Todd Brunetti insisted on dragging the State of Maryland through a costly trial, where we learn that Brunetti and Vance/Smyth/Mormon were old friends from high school and rekindled their relationship on Facebook. When found at a Reisterstown motel a few days after the homicide, Mr. Brunetti was in possession of the victim's bank card and car. Kenneth Todd Brunetti was found guilty.
