I believe in God. I don't believe in what humans did with the message.
That distinction matters because most people think questioning religion means rejecting God. It doesn't. It means reading the source material without the filter that 1,600 years of institutional editing put on top of it.
The texts that became the Bible have been translated, edited, reinterpreted, and politically curated since the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Books were removed. Passages were reframed. Entire theological frameworks were constructed around translations of translations of copies of copies. By the time a verse reaches a modern English Bible, it has passed through Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, and Middle English, with each translator making choices about what a word "really meant."
Those choices aren't neutral. They reflect the politics, theology, and cultural biases of the translator and the institution that commissioned the translation. King James didn't fund a Bible translation out of devotion. He funded it to consolidate religious authority under the English crown. That context doesn't disappear because the binding is leather.
Textual criticism. Comparing the oldest available manuscripts against modern translations to identify where the text changed and why. Not to disprove the Bible, but to find what was actually written before institutions decided what it should say.
Translation analysis. Hebrew and Greek don't map cleanly onto English. Single words in the original languages carry meaning that requires entire sentences to express in English. When a translator picks one English word over another, they're choosing an interpretation, not delivering a fact. I trace those choices and look at what got lost.
The "us" problem. Genesis 1:26 says "Let us make man in our image." That plural has never been satisfactorily explained by monotheistic theology. The standard answers, the royal we, the Trinity, a conversation with angels, are all retrofitted explanations imposed on a text that predates the theology used to explain it. The Sumerian source material has no ambiguity about who "us" refers to.
Pre-Nicene Christianity. What did early Christians actually believe before the institutional church standardized doctrine? The diversity of belief in the first three centuries is staggering compared to what survived the canonization process. Entire gospels were excluded. Entire theological traditions were declared heretical not because they were wrong but because they were inconvenient.
The rapture critique. The rapture doctrine as popularly taught didn't exist until John Nelson Darby introduced it in the 1830s. For 1,800 years of Christianity, nobody taught a secret disappearance event. The early church fathers didn't teach it. The Catholic church doesn't teach it. The Orthodox church doesn't teach it. It's a 190-year-old interpretation amplified by the Scofield Reference Bible and turned into pop culture by fiction novels. The actual texts describe preparation and survival, not evacuation.
I don't start with a denomination's position and work backward to justify it. I start with the oldest available text in its original language, compare it against what the institutions built on top of it, and follow the discrepancies wherever they lead.
The goal isn't to destroy faith. The goal is to strip away the layers that humans added so whatever is underneath can be seen clearly. If the message is real, it doesn't need institutional protection. It survives scrutiny. If it can't survive scrutiny, it wasn't the message in the first place.
