Internet speed test, also known as "speedtest", shows how many Mbps your internet connection was at the time you did the internet speed test. You can also learn the value of the quality of your internet connection through the test. In general, the test that gives these two results is called a speed test.
Speed tests compare the internet speed offered by your internet service provider to the internet speed you are currently using. In this way, you can see whether the internet speed offered to you and the internet speed you use are close to each other.
In addition, with the internet speed test (speedtest), you can see your ping (delay in sent and received data), upload (data sending speed) and download (download speed that your contracted internet company has committed to you).
It's good to be reminded. Since the speed of your internet you use may be affected by your modem, cables or various external reasons, you should do your internet speed tests regularly. Thus, with the healthy data you will obtain, you can make more accurate decisions to improve your internet quality.
When you start the internet speed test, first your location is determined and your speed test is done over your location. After your location is determined, the closest server to your location is contacted before the speed test starts. After contacting the server closest to your location, a signal is sent to your server. This signal is called a ping, and the ping receives a response from the server. The speed test you have started reveals the result of your internet speed according to the signal sent to the server and the speed of the response to this signal.
When all processes regarding the signal sent to the server and the signal coming from the server are completed, a download process is started for speedtest this time. During the downloaded download process, many times are communicated between your computer and the server. As a result of the communication established, data pieces are started to be downloaded and how long it takes for the data to reach your computer is measured and how long it takes for your computer to download the data is observed. Meanwhile, the amount of data used during the data acquisition phase is not overlooked. In this way, it is understood whether there is data loss or not.
At the end of all these processes, the speedtest is concluded and the results are shared with the user in detail.
As we mentioned before, with the speed test you will do, you can clearly and accurately measure your download (i.e. data download) and upload (i.e. data upload) speeds. However, there are some factors that you should pay attention to in this process.
The first of these is related to your ethernet cable. First of all, you should connect your computer and modem using your ethernet cable. If your computer already has a wireless connection feature, you should temporarily disable this feature. The reason for this is to make sure that you have done the internet speed test in a wireless format. It is recommended to do it when a wired connection is established, since no reliable results can be obtained in speed tests on wireless connections.
It is recommended that you close the browser tabs that may use your internet while performing an internet speed test on your computer and may adversely affect the speedtest results.
During the speedtest, if you have programs that can use your internet in the background of your computer, you should make sure that you close them all. This includes your virus programs. For this reason, you can also temporarily disable your virus programs. Apart from all this, you should make sure that no other devices are connected to your internet (such as your mobile phone, television or family members' devices).
It's good for us to remember. The result of your internet speed test may vary according to other internet users in the same region as you or depending on the infrastructure of the building you are in.
