Bishop Ali Tote

Is the Gospel you

proclaim for me?

As an immigrant, as a scientist, as an ordained pastor, and now as the first black (African-born) bishop in the ELCIC (current Bishop of Saskatchewan), Ali Tote blends his ministry with a background in public health, marginalized community support, and social advocacy. Born in Cameroon, he emigrated to Canada in search of opportunities to become a doctor, earning good money to support his family back home.

An encounter with people living with disabilities in a L’Arche community led him to rethink his mission and to discover a vocation to ministry in the church. At the same time as serving as a pastor, he continued his medical studies and pursued an academic career, specializing in Innovative leadership and Epidemiology, which looks at disease prevention and control by researching the health conditions and other factors that cause sickness and addiction in indigenous and other disadvantaged communities.

Bishop Ali has a deep well of wisdom and experience to draw from as he brings a message of hope and gracious compassion, inspiring and equipping leaders to reach out to those in need around them.
