How can I support my child at home?
The best way you can support your child at home is to talk to him/her about his/her work in class! I send home your child's work on a regular basis. Take a few moments to look over your child's work and then have a quick discussion with them. Give him/her praise for the things he/she did well, and then quickly talk about a few things your child can focus on to improve. This might include: reading the directions carefully, fully answering a question, taking his/her time, double checking work, slowing down, etc.
If there is something specific that I feel your child needs extra support with at home, I will let you know. I will set up a time to meet with you and we will discuss a plan to better support your child.
Can I send in birthday treats for my child?
Yes! If possible, I do ask that you send me a quick e-mail letting me know that you will be sending treats with your child so that I can plan accordingly. I do ask that you keep the treat simple (cookie, cupcake, brownies, Rice Krispy treats, etc.) and that you send napkins with the treat. I don't always have enough napkins on hand...and you know kids can get messy. ;)
Are there spelling tests?
We do not have a weekly spelling test. We do have a weekly spelling pattern/s that we will focus on in class. Students will be graded on spelling based on how they do on one weekly assignment, as well as how they apply their spelling knowledge in their weekly writing assignment.
Does my child have homework?
In second grade we do not assign weekly/nightly homework. Instead we ask that you have your child read nightly, practice math facts, and enjoy time as a family. One of the best ways to practice reading, counting, and social skills is through board games and cooking! So instead of homework, play a board game with your child or have him/her help you with dinner!
Is everything in class a graded assignment?
No, not everything is a graded assignment. Most work students do is some form of practice - either something we have completed together, something they have worked with a partner on, or independent practice. If it is a graded assignment, you will see a score at the top of the paper.
Why does my child's work have green correction marks and a score written in a different color?
I believe in students have instant feedback on how they did on a test. Because of this, we correct every test together as a class. Students correct their own work with a green pen. When I collect them, I review it as well, and then write their final score on top.
How can I check my child's grades?
You can check your child's grades at any point in time. Log in to your Parent Connect account, and click on "Assignments."
