Figure 14: Locks Used in Jails
The most prevalent type of security technology used in jail cells are electromechanical locks. Electromechanical locks function similarly to normal locks and keys the only difference is their size [11]. They have a mortise lock and cylinder, which means the locking mechanism is installed inside the door. The door is drilled or cut to create a pocket for the mortise lock, and the device is then fitted in the hole [11]. The mortise lock will secure the lock's bolt work, or the internal mechanics that retract and extend the bolts [11]. A mortise cylinder is a piece of equipment that allows the key to move the bolt work. These cylinders are frequently quite huge, having larger keyways, and are used in prison locks [11]. Likewise, the keys are somewhat large in comparison to regular keys for standard pin tumbler locks [11]. This is because the amount of torque required to unlock the locks is larger [11]. Furthermore, it is more difficult for a prisoner to collect enough material to produce a key of that size. A mortise cylinder is often threaded so that it can be screwed into the lock, and they are frequently equipped with rotating shields to prevent the cylinder from being tampered with and exposing the bolt work [11]. Figure 14 reveals locks that are utilized in prisons all over the United States.
Living in a noisy household filled with children can get tough sometimes. Not only is it always chaotic but you have no personal space as well. Studying for my exams and trying to get my university work done can get challenging at times as I always get distracted by someone coming into my room. Lock and keys have been of great help as I can lock myself in my room, that way no one can come in and it makes it easier for me to stay focused and finish my assignments. I prefer locks and keys over a pin lock or a lock that can be accessed with a card, as a lock and key would provide that extra security I need. It can be harder to access the keys rather than knowing the pin or being able to get access to a card.
