Jim Rainforth (January 27, 1936 - June 23, 2011)
Jim Rainforth was a valuable “End-to-End” member of the Niagara Bruce Trail Club for many years. He was President of the Club from 2001-2003.
Perhaps his most memorable contribution was the culmination of 30 years’ work by the Club to realize the completion of the Sand Plant Hill Pedestrian Bridge which crosses the QEW near Mountain Road in Niagara Falls. The Bruce Trail crossed the QEW at ground level for years. Expansion of the QEW in 2004-2007 meant that pedestrians could no longer cross the highway, and the trail was temporarily re-routed onto sideroads. Jim worked with representatives from the Ministry of Transport, Regional Government, CN Rail, the Bruce Trail Conservancy, and the Branscombe Family Foundation on this project for years and managed to secure guaranteed funding of $450,000. The Pedestrian Bridge was officially opened on June 22, 2008 and provides a safe crossing for Bruce Trail hikers across this busy highway.
Jim continued to contribute in many ways. He was a dedicated trail maintenance worker and hike leader, particularly in the Beamsville area where he led weekly hikes. He generously supported public relations and social endeavors of the Bruce Trail Club. His contribution of fresh seasonal fruit from Niagara area farmers, especially on annual Bruce Trail Days, was a treat to look forward to. Jim was always quietly ready to offer advice when asked. He was a great resource for those following in his footsteps. In October 2008 he was recognized by the Town of Lincoln for his community and environmental work.
Sadly, Jim passed away in 2011. Happy hiking, Jim.
