I was first inspired to create a photo book of travel photos by my friend and fellow creative, Sadie. She does an album each year and for big trips. And, her organized and well-designed photo books made me realize that I was letting too many of my favorite memories sit in digital purgatory.

Swanstone adjusts his chair to get a better view of the photograph albums on his living room table. He was site manager for 19 years, replacing his uncle who was there for 11 years. His son, Donald Swanstone, Jr., replaced him for two years after many years of accompanying his father after school.

Karl Hcker's photograph album includes both documentation of official visits and ceremonies at Auschwitz as well as more personal photographs depicting the many social activities that he and other members of the Auschwitz camp staff enjoyed.

Though there are photos taken upon visits to Solahtte throughout the album, a series of photographs document a social gathering at Solahtte for the SS hierarchy. In attendance were some of the most notorious officers of the concentration camp system.

Several pages are devoted to a day trip for SS Helferinnen (female auxiliaries, young women who worked for the SS as communications specialists) on July 22, 1944. They arrive at Solahtte and run down a ramp accompanied to the music of an accordionist. A full-page spread of six photographs entitled "Hier gibt es Blaubeeren" (Here there are blueberries) shows Hcker passing out bowls of fresh blueberries to the young women sitting on a fence. When the girls finish theatrically eating their blueberries for the camera, one girl poses with fake tears and an inverted bowl. Only miles away on the very same day, 150 prisoners (Jews and non-Jews) arrived on a transport to Auschwitz. The SS selected 21 men and 12 women for work, and killed the remaining members of the transport in the gas chambers.

The album also contains photographs taken most likely in the aftermath of that very same December 26, 1944, air raid. These photographs were taken just weeks prior to the SS evacuation of the camp to avoid capture by Soviet troops. That day, the US 455th Bombing Group hit targets on the outskirts of Birkenau, where the SS military hospital was located, and on the factories and oil refineries attached to Auschwitz (located in Auschwitz III-Monowitz). Hcker's photographs, captioned "Beisetzung von SS-Kameraden nach einem Terrorangriff" (The Burial of our SS Comrades after a Terror Attack), show a processional with horse-drawn hearses, seventeen flag-draped coffins, and a large group of mourners, including widows and children. The SS funeral service involved wreath laying, lots of flowers, and a military honor guard. One month later, Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz.

The bulk of the photographs (ca.1895-1904) in the album record the activities of the Indian students at the Colorado River Indian Reservation boarding school. Additional photographs document the buildings at the school, local scenery and terrain, class photos, school staff, excursions, Mohave Indian life and customs. Many photographs are notated with some individuals identified. The teacher in many of the class and group photographs is probably Anna E. Sinclair (b. November 1861; Iowa) from Chicago, Ill. She was the sister-in-law of the school's Indian Agent, Charles S. McNichols. A number of photographs were taken by L[ouis]. W. Sinclair (b.January 1865; Ind.), the farmer at the boarding school.

Okay so I know this may sound like a stupid question and although I really know the answers I guess I just really want opinions. It took my photographer forever to finish my album, then it took me forever to remember to order it. So my dilemma is do I put my husbands name first or mine? I have seen it done both ways so this is what confuses me. I know that pre-wedding, my name is always first. But technically this is after the wedding (even though it is 'wedding stuff') and is something we will have forever and will be embossed on the cover and I don't know if it should say husband & wife -or- wife & husband. I really like the way his name would look first but then the fact that so many women put their name first is always ringing in the back of my mind that it's lead me to this agonizing point. Please give me your wonderful opinions and advice!!

There are several companies out there. I've been using Merit Albums for 20 years. It's local for me, about a 1/2 hour away, but I usually have them ship it to me. I used their Topflight Big Bargain 5X5" proof books in the film days, now I use their 4X6 albums. You can have the name of the bride and groom, with the marriage date stamped on the cover. You can say I sent you so you will be listed as a pro. Viola usually answers the phone.

From being the "head cheerleader" who encourages and supports her daughter in Girl Scouting, to accompanying the girls on a field trip to a local museum, to helping raise the funds and traveling with a group to a Girl Scout World Center in India, you can use your skills and explore your own interests through Girl Scouting, too. Here are a few of the many ways you can support your Girl Scout: 2351a5e196
