Under the Train Horn Rule (49 CFR Part 222, issued on August 17, 2006), locomotive engineers must begin to sound train horns at least 15 seconds, and no more than 20 seconds, in advance of all public grade crossings. If a train is traveling faster than 60 mph, engineers will not sound the horn until it is within 1/4 mile of the crossing, even if the advance warning is less than 15 seconds. There is a "good faith" exception for locations where engineers cannot precisely estimate their arrival at a crossing and may begin to sound the horn no more than 25 seconds before arriving at the crossing.

Train horns must be sounded in a standardized pattern of 2 long, 1 short, and 1 long blasts. The pattern must be repeated or prolonged until the lead locomotive or lead cab car occupies the grade crossing. The rule does not stipulate the durations of long and short blasts. The maximum volume level for the train horn is 110 decibels, and the minimum sound level is 96 decibels.

The history of the horns dates back much further. The Heritage Horns, as they are known at Canada Place, were built as a BC Hydro Canadian Centennial project in 1967 and were designed by engineer and sound specialist, Robert Swanson. For many years, they were positioned on the roof of the original BC Hydro Building where they sounded every high noon in the downtown core for more than 20 years. When BC Hydro vacated the building in the 1990s, the horns fell silent. Shortly thereafter, a permanent home was found. Canada Place Corporation acquired and refurbished the horns, and placed them on the roof of the Pan Pacific Hotel at Canada Place. And on November 8th of 1994, the familiar sounding of the horns returned to Vancouver at noon, just in time for lunch!

Hello! This evening, my Mac started making tooting horn sounds every few minutes as if theres an error. I cant see an error anywhere. There is nothing unusual in the console (apart from the sandbox error when Im running mail but this is sporadic and not consequent with the tooting) and there is no visual error. Plus, my default alert sound is not a tooting horn. Does anyone know how I might discover what it is?

I recently talked with someone who had shut down her iMac and the next day a horn sound was playing about every two minutes while on the Desktop screen. It sounded kind of like a clown horn, it had two shorts beeps a pause and two beeps.

This sound was occuring in a new account we made, and it also appeared while on the login screen. We were about to test it in Recovery to see if it was a hardware issue, but she had to leave. While I am aware that there are many start up tones that indicate errors, I have never seen this before.

However, the safety equipment the Federal Railroad Administration requires to allow trains not to sound their horns could be too costly for the Treasure Coast to install and maintain. Signs, lights and vehicle-detection technology could cost $18 million, the agency estimated in 2015. Governments that opposed Brightline's Miami-Orlando service rejected the company's offer to pay for most of the work if metropolitan planning organizations paid the balance.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) required pattern for blowing the horn is two long, one short, and one long sounding horn, repeated as necessary until the locomotive clears the crossing. Locomotive engineers retain the authority to vary this pattern as necessary for crossings in close proximity and are allowed to sound the horn in emergency situations.

In line with federal regulations, public authorities wanting to maintain Pre-Rule or Intermediate Quiet Zones were required to submit a Notice of Continuation in accordance with the rule by June 3, 2005. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in the sounding of the train horn beginning Friday, June 24, 2005, and continuing for 21 days from the date the Notice of Continuation is properly filed.

Establishing quiet zones not only creates a public safety risk but also is a potential cost burden to taxpayers. Public authorities are responsible for the cost of preliminary engineering, construction, maintenance and replacement of active warning devices or their components, including wayside horn systems installed at crossings to meet quiet zone standards.

DEAR CAR TALK: In hot weather, I occasionally hear a very loud horn-like sound when I drive at 65 mph or higher. The noise appears to be on the passenger side, toward the front of the car. The local Honda dealer and a local mechanic have checked belts, windows, sunroof and the hood latch. It seems to happen only when I am driving on a curve, and it will stop if I slow to less than 65 mph. I need your help. Thanks.

The San Luis Obispo County Early Warning System (EWS) sirens are located throughout the Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ). Although the siren system was installed as one of the requirements related to the operation of Diablo Canyon Power Plant, the sirens can be used for any local emergency where there is a need for the public to act. When activated, the sirens will sound for three minutes. The sirens are an indication that the Emergency Alert System (EAS) has been activated, and emergency information will be provided on local radio and television stations.Go indoors and tune to a local radio or television station.

The EWS sirens are tested annually during the month of August in a full-scale test. During the annual test, all 131 sirens are sounded at full volume for three minutes. The system is sounded at 12:00 pm and again at 12:30 pm to allow for emergency officials to test both the primary and backup activation points.

In addition to the full-scale test, the sirens undergo monthly silent tests as well as quarterly low volume growl tests. Although you may notice the sirens rotating or hear a low volume siren sound for a period of a few seconds, no action is required or requested on the part of the public during these tests.

In general terms, a Quiet Zone may be established after implementing safety improvements that provide the same level of risk reduction as would otherwise be provided by the train horn. A Quiet Zone can be one crossing in a community, or several consecutive crossings in one or more communities.
