Volunteer Programme
AT LN’P NURSERY SCHOOL, KIGOMA
The volunteer programme we are offering aims to support the operational part of the school's functioning. Through the weekly participation fee you will contribute to cover the costs of staff, utilities and services, meals and uniforms and ensure that the school remains free for all these children from impoverished families in the poor neighbourhood of Kichangachui where we are located.
We welcome anyone over the age of 18 with or without experience in working with children.
It is possible to volunteer all year round, excluding school holidays (in January, with the start of the school year, school holidays are announced which normally include Easter, one month in summer, two weeks in September, and Christmas period). There is no minimum or maximum length of time but it is recommended between 2 and 4 weeks.
The volunteer programme runs from Monday to Friday every morning from 8am to 12 noon, except Friday, which ends at 10am, as it is the day of the Muslim worship.
The volunteer programme starts every Monday, without exception.
The participation fee is €50 per week per volunteer. The fee is payable in one instalment on the first day of the programme and for the number of weeks you are going to stay with us.
The fee can be paid in € or its equivalent in TZS.
We suggest different types of accommodation so that you can choose the one that suits you best. The selected accommodation will be booked by yourself (in case you need assistance for the booking let us know), and you will pay directly to the lodge on your departure.
Accommodation includes breakfast in the price, and you can choose to add lunch and/or dinner, depending on whether or not you are interested, by requesting it directly from the hotel when you arrive. Or you can decide to eat out at local restaurants (eating out in Kigoma is very affordable).
To make your stay as pleasant as possible, we have selected a number of lodges with beach or swimming pool, and these are their approximate prices in double room occupancy (for single use please check price directly to the lodge), all of which are located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in the Bangwe district, just a few minute’s walk from the city centre, and about 20 minutes from the school by bajaji (local transport).
But apart from these, there are many more located in different areas of the city and with prices ranging from 10€ to 30€ per night, so feel free to find your own accommodation in Kigoma if you wish. You only have to let us know where you will be staying (and if you need further assistance just inform us).
To go each day from your lodge to the school, located in the community of Kinchangachui, in the Ujiji district of Kigoma, we will organize a bajaji to pick you up and take you to the project and bring you back to the lodge. The price of the bajaji is around 6000tz each way (about €2) for a maximum of 3 people and is paid directly to the driver each way.
The activities to be carried out are defined on the basis of the volunteer's profile and are agreed with you once you are here and for the days you are going to be in with us. These usually include giving support to the teachers, to support children's introduction to basic English, doing crafts and games and sports during breaks, helping in the canteen, supporting maintenance work in the centre, gardening, etc.
LN'P school is also available to organize group stays up to a maximum of 8/10 people, either students, or specific groups interested in doing a stage with us.
We can tailor-make programmes based on the requirements of the whole group.
Please ask for further information.
