Supporting our Lower Mainland Seniors Snooker League
Dear League Members,
The LMSSL has been running at a deficit since Covid. We have managed so far because we collected registration fees for the Covid year, but did not have our usual expenses like Prizes, Tournament Snacks, Referee Clinic, AGM and the Awards Banquet during that period.
We would like to do more for our members, like having all-inclusive tournaments and social events.
Our league is more than just a weekly game of snooker. It is a place for socializing, friendly competition and staying mentally and physically active.
Over the years, many members have asked how they can support the league beyond playing. To make that possible, we have introduced a voluntary donation page to our league website, where members, family and friends can contribute if they wish.
All contributions go directly toward supporting the league, including:
Supporting league activities and events.
Helping keep league fees affordable for our senior members.
Ensuring the long-term sustainability of our league.
Providing a safe, friendly, and healthy social environment for our seniors.
Your name will appear on the LMSSL website Donation Page along with the amount donated, unless you prefer to remain anonymous, in which case we will comply. Unfortunately, we cannot provide tax receipts for your gift. You can donate by E-transfer, cheque or cash. Our Captains can receive any cash donations, that can then be forwarded to the league treasurer Frank Girard.
Here’s the link to the new LMSSL Donations page: https://sites.google.com/view/lmseniorssnookerleague-2020/donations
Methods of payment to donate as follows:.
Payment by Etransfer: lmsslfinance@gmail.com
Payment by cheque payable to: LMSSL or Lower Mainland Seniors Snooker League and mailed to:
Frank Girard 1561 Bramble Lane, Coquitlam, BC, V3E 2T3
Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with questions.
Tony Caya (604) 834-2597 Email: tonycaya1@gmail.com
The success of our league comes from the camaraderie and spirit of its members. Thank you for being a part of what makes the Lower Mainland Seniors Snooker League such a supportive, welcoming and enjoyable community for our seniors.
Sincerely,
LMSSL Executive Committee

February 2, 2026
Pat Curley, one of our league Tournament Directors & a member of the Confederation A team & a Burnaby Firefighter, pulled an unconscious woman from a burning car in Burnaby in October 2025. Pat went into the flames alone in an extremely dangerous situation & pulled her out of the car to safety. He has since received awards and also personal letters recently from both his local MP and the Prime Minister acknowledging his bravery and heroism. Very, very well done, Pat, and very worthy of the recognition you received.
Referee Refresher Clinic
On December 9, we had a Referee Refresher Clinic for 3 hours at the Dogwood Snooker Room. We had 8 certified refs and 17 other players who came to learn.
Stan Ziolkowski and I ran the teaching side of it with lively participation from most of those present. Stan’s specialty is referee deportment and he spent a while teaching us how to look and act the part.
The Q&A session was especially fun with a lot of intelligent questions from our Non Referees.
It was impressive to see such enthusiasm for the rules.
We gave out plenty of material which was kindly photocopied and bound by Tony. We also gave out Peradon ball markers to everyone who needed one and gloves of various sizes to the referees present.
Thanks to Tony, Peter, Phil and others for helping to organize and clean up afterwards, and a special thank you to Al Johnston for getting the coffee and pizza, muffins, donuts, cookies etc.
A true team effort.
From this response it maybe something that can be repeated more often.
For those interested, there were a few rules questions on the WST.TV website (which is the new name for World Snooker’s website). See if you can find it now and get them right. We covered some of them in the seminar.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

Chief Referee
Inaugural Dogwood LMSSL Singles Invitational
Thanks to all that attended our Dogwood Singles Invitational on Tuesday 16th December, 2025. Special thanks to Marke Sedawie, along with League Tournament Director Pat Curley, for spending the entire day with us.
We witnessed some incredible snooker in our inaugural Invitational Singles Double Knockout event. We gathered an elite 16 players from the LMSSL. We had all 16 spots filled within three days, with several more requests to participate that we unfortunately couldn’t fit in to our small room at Dogwood. All 16 players & Referees, in their smart new shirts, along with many volunteers turned up on time! I’m proud to announce that the event went perfectly!
We provided many Draw Prizes. Gift Cards General Draw- 9 x $25 gift cards, $50 winner and $50 High Break with $25 to the runner-up. Donuts. Muffins, donuts & a constant supply of drinks were provided along with a free lunch in our Boulevard Cafe. Many compliments on our delicious Cabbage rolls with perogies & coleslaw enjoyed by al!. We had a hard fought battle all day with Kevin Deroo, Ken Potocky, Dalton Roy, Nelson Lee, Ron Rankin & Wade Wutke making it to the later stages. Our snooker room was full of spectators for the final between Dalton Roy & Kevin Deroo. Dalton eventually won, but not without a valiant fight from Kevin, forcing the competition to the final frame. What an atmosphere! I am proud to announce that we will be staging this event again next year. I received many compliments to share with my group of volunteers... Al Johnston, Peter Hiebert, Phil Davies & our Chief Referee Anthony Braganza.
I’m hoping one or two other venues could put a similar event together in the future.
Winner: Dalton Roy won $50 Gift Card and Trophy
Runner Up: Kevin Deroo won $25 gift Card
High Break: Dalton Roy (48) won $50 Gift Card
My personal thanks go out to all that helped to stage a magnificent event. See you all at the next one!
Congratulations Dalton!
Merry Christmas to you and your families. See you all in the new year!

To all A & B Captains
The Board has asked that home team Captains read out the following reminders at the start of each match before reading out the pairings & handicaps for the 1st games of the match.
Thank you
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to <visiting team name> to <home team center>. (ie welcome Dogwood to Kennedy)
A few reminders before we get started.
Please remember that this is a social league and we need to treat each other kindly and with respect.
Rule change from Anthony Braganza, Chief Referee…
The words Confer, Consult, Coaching will now be merged into the word COACHING.
Coaching will be allowed 3 times a frame for 30 seconds, after the opponent has finished their turn. This includes any coaching, both away from the table and at the table. Opponents are asked to remind players during their third coaching. Any further coaching will be considered a foul and the team loses their turn. All coaching must stop literally when the cue ball is struck on the first shot of the turn.
If you need a referee for any calls please note that the Referees On Call are <>. (for example, Steve Surinak for Kennedy)
Please turn your cell phones off or to silent or vibrate mode now.
Use a fist bump rather than a handshake to keep it simple.
As always, if any of your teammates are not feeling well or have any “symptoms” they should not come to play thereby keeping everyone safe.
August 8, 2025
To all A & B Captains & their teams
Welcome to the 2025-2026 LMSSL season.
A few reminders as we get ready to start the new season…
The league starts the 1st week in September… Wednesday, Sept 3rd for the “B” league & Thursday, Sept 4th for the “A” league…. 10:00 start time for both leagues.
The “A” league has 4 teams… B-Select, Confederation, Kennedy & Maple Ridge.
The “B” league has 8 teams… Bonsor, Century House, Confederation, Dogwood, Edmonds, Kennedy, Minoru & Pitt Meadows.
Schedules
The “A” & “B” league schedules are attached below & are posted on the PDF Files for Printing page of the website at https://sites.google.com/view/lmseniorssnookerleague-2020/pdf-files-for-printing
Schedules are randomly generated & are “balanced”… meaning each team plays the same number of matches &, as much as possible, the same number of home & away matches & the same number of matches against each other…. without consideration to team locations, travel distances, home & away sequences, etc.
Handicaps
The handicap system for the A league will use a handicap factor of 2 with a maximum spot of 40 with new player Opening Handicaps based on last season’s results and tweaked by the handicap committee.
The handicap system for the B league will use a handicap factor of 2 with a maximum spot of 25 with new player Opening Handicaps based on last season’s results and tweaked by the handicap committee.
A & B handicap reports are posted on the PDF Files for Printing page of the website at https://sites.google.com/view/lmseniorssnookerleague-2020/pdf-files-for-printing
Scoresheets
The Scoresheet with handicapping is on the website to be used for all matches… see important note below re weekly scoresheet completion.
Scoresheets must be sent to me via email or text immediately when the match is completed so that I can get the website updated in a timely manner.
If handwritten, please make sure that the Scoresheets are clearly printed so I don’t need to bother you for clarification.
As always, weekly results, updated handicap reports, league standings, high breaks & weekly scoresheets will be posted each week on the website along with other league information.
The league website link should be stored in your “Favorites” & is located at https://sites.google.com/view/lmseniorssnookerleague-2020/news
When available, each Captain & their Centre should receive a copy of the updated league Constitution for all to review. It will also be posted on the website.
As always, if any of your teammates are not feeling well or have any “symptoms” they should not come to play thereby keeping everyone safe.
Important note re the Scoresheet
Going forward please use the Excel version of the Scoresheet currently available on the Forms & Documents page of the website . You're welcome to take a copy of it and file it on your computer for use during the season. Captains and others are encouraged not to modify the posted Excel version of the Scoresheet. If you're using an old version of the scoresheet please replace with the current version immediately.
Each week the Home team Captain should fill in the Excel version of the scoresheet with their lineup and player handicaps, send it to the Visiting team Captain for them to complete their lineup and player handicaps who would then return to the Home Captain so that both Captains are working with the same version & to provide a printed copy for match day. If changes are needed on match day they can be done manually on the printed copy.
PDF or photo versions of the scoresheet should not be passed back & forth between Captains as they will then have to print it and fill it in by hand.

Reminder
The League Code of Conduct (Article 4 in the Constitution) that says… Generally speaking, snooker is most often played without a referee or umpire. Therefore the welfare of our seniors' snooker league relies on the personal integrity and decorum of all of its members, irrespective of how competitive they may be. Players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy at all times and thereby promoting the etiquette and traditions of snooker.
Looking forward to another enjoyable season.
