Graduation Requirements

Louisa-Muscatine High School requires 52 credits to graduate.

To help students stay on track this is how L-M classifies grade levels:


Freshmen 0 - 12.5 credits

Sophomore 13 - 25.5 credits

Junior 26 - 36.5 credits

Senior 37+ credits


Each one semester class is worth 1 credit. ex: Algebra IA = 1 credit, Algebra 1B = 1 credit

Students must complete:


8 English Credits:

2 English I (9th)

2 English II (10th)

1 English III (11th)

1 CCR English (11th)

1 Literature elective (11/12th)

1 Composition elective (11/12th)


-Literature electives: American Literature, Short Story, MCC Literature, Contemporary Literature

-Composition electives: Writing and Film, Creative Writing, MCC Composition I, MCC Composition II, MCC Speech, Life English

**MCC Lit, MCC Comp I & II and MCC Speech offer potential college credit


6 Math Credits:

Math classes differ for each student. Freshmen can start in either Algebra or Geometry. The progression for math classes at LM is Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus/College Prep Math/Financial Algebra, and MCC Statistics. Students must pass Algebra II to graduate.

**MCC Statistics offers potential college credit


Science 6 Credits

2 Physical Science A, B

2 Biology A, B

2 Science Electives (A,B) from the following: Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy & Physiology, General Science


6 Social Studies Credits

2 American History (9th)

2 World History (10th)

1 Social Problems (11th)

1 American Government (12th)


-Social Studies electives are: Recent American History, Current US Topics, online MCC options, which count as elective credit


4 Physical Education Credits

2 PE classes must be taken per year (.5 credit per semester)

Offerings are PE 9-12, PE 9-12 Advanced, Personal Fitness, and Strength & Conditioning

1 Economics and Financial Literacy (11th/12th)


1 Health I

1 Health I


20 Elective Credits

Electives may be in the areas of Family/Consumer Science, Industrial Technology, Agriculture, Business, Art, Foreign Language, Music, additional core courses, and Study Skills.
