When a storm or fire makes a home uninhabitable Red Cross is called. Disaster Duty Officers (DDOs) are volunteers who sign up for shifts to work from home. They get the call from Red Cross HQ/DC and send out volunteers to meet the residents to offer immediate short term assistance. Within two days a volunteer case worker calls to see if they can assist in any way with Medical, Mental or Spiritual support and provide local referrals.
During the winter cold snap, when we had the 20 tractor trailer pile-up closing I-10, Red Cross partnered with Colores United to open a Shelter in Deming for stranded motorists.
There are plenty of positions available to help as little or much as you like.
