The Beginning of Change
The first event that diverted humanity from its ordinary course toward what is known in Darksuun occurred around the time of the Industrial Revolution. As people began building increasingly sophisticated machines and advancing their technology, something extraordinary appeared in the night sky.
A radiant, mysterious purple light emerged overhead. Through telescopes, scientists discovered it was no mere shooting star or common phenomenon, but a relatively small meteor streaking across the heavens, trailing a brilliant spectrum of color. Remarkably, that luminous streak was first observed five years before the meteorite actually struck Earth.
Over that half-decade, the meteor’s glow intensified. Although most nations paid little attention—reports were scarce—those who watched closely noticed the darkness of night gradually receding, until the once-pitch black sky was reduced by sixty percent.
When the meteor finally impacted the surface, it was small enough to avoid the global devastation many had feared—but its effects proved utterly unforeseen. Rather than dissipating harmlessly, the meteor released catastrophic energy, annihilating life, structures, and shelters within seconds. Scientists later deduced that the rock had absorbed enormous stellar energy during its journey and fused it with pure shadow upon impact, unleashing a devastating new force.
The result was apocalyptic: ninety-five percent of Earth’s population perished instantly, and countless advancements of civilization were buried under rubble and ash.
In the fifty years that followed, our world resembled a furnace. Firestorms and ash rains ravaged the land, and a further quarter of the survivors died struggling to rebuild.
Gradually, over the next four hundred and fifty years, the planet cooled and stabilized. Though largely uninhabited, the Earth’s surface grew habitable again. Yet humanity teetered on the brink of extinction, and most mammals faced a similar fate.
The Rebirth of Humanity
Seven hundred years after the cataclysm, humanity found a fragile equilibrium. Survival remained a challenge, but the basics of life were easier, and lost technologies slowly returned. It was during this era, in a modest yet thriving village, that a child named Apolo was born.
From an early age, Apolo displayed extraordinary intelligence. While other children played in meadows, he immersed himself in science and history books, peppering elders with questions about ancient discoveries. His obsession with learning set him apart—and often isolated him.
Despite his loneliness, Apolo never wavered. He dreamed of exploring the universe and uncovering what he called the "Central Cardinal Point," a mythical place at Earth’s core where trees glowed and unimaginable phenomena unfolded. Though his vision evolved over time, that yearning never faded.
The Eldén Tree
In Apolo’s village stood a singular tree known as Eldén. Villagers revered it as "God’s Light," for it glowed with a celestial brilliance through its golden leaves. Its petrified trunk, harder than stone, made it a sacred monument. Offerings were placed at its roots in hopes of divine favor.
Apolo, respectful but skeptical, longed to understand Eldén scientifically. How could a tree thrive without direct sunlight or water? Why did its leaves contain traces of metals and carbon unlike any ordinary flora? And why had it never produced a single seed?
He planted other saplings around Eldén, sprinkled its soil in his garden, and concocted nutrient infusions from old village remedies. He scoured dusty tomes for rituals or legends, even drawing its silhouette on the ground in hopes of invoking its spirit. Yet Eldén’s secret remained locked.
The Solitary Scientist
As years passed, Apolo became the village’s respected inventor, crafting devices that improved daily life. Still, he felt a void. Though proud of his achievements, he knew there was more beyond his workshop. The Central Cardinal Point and Eldén’s true origin called to him.
In his studies, Apolo uncovered impossible truths: Eldén needed neither sun nor rain, its trunk was mineral-rich, and, most baffling, it bore no fruit. He concluded there must be another tree like it somewhere—and that to find it, he needed to journey to the mysterious place in his dreams.
The Desperate Decision
Gathering clues of similar discoveries in neighboring hamlets, Apolo resolved on a drastic measure. He convinced trusted friends that Eldén was dying from a parasitic infection and claimed the mayor’s permission for an urgent rescue dig. Though uneasy, they followed his lead.
After hours of frantic digging, they unearthed nothing noteworthy—until Apolo dug deeper and found a diamond-shaped crystal containing a shriveled seed. More seeds lay buried, one remarkably intact. Excitement surged: Eldén was no divine miracle but the product of a powerful seed.
Before he could analyze his find, dawn revealed a mob of angry villagers at the site of their sacred tree. Realizing the enormity of his betrayal, Apolo fled home with his samples. Explaining himself to his horrified parents, he watched their disappointment but felt no regret. The discovery had given him purpose.
That night, he escaped through a back window to his secret laboratory. Examining the seed under a primitive microscope, he detected ancient excrement residues—proof it had been dispersed by some creature. Packing his equipment, Apolo set out in his hidden carriage, determined to follow the seed’s origin.
The Journey
Early in his quest, Apolo fashioned a necklace from the perfect seed, a symbol of where he came from and where he aimed to go. Along the way, he recruited weary souls seeking new beginnings—adults, orphans, and anyone desperate for hope.
After four months and more than a thousand kilometers, they reached a mountain rumored to offer the clearest path forward. By night, they saw a peculiar glow on the horizon: a swirl of light streaming from beyond a colossal mountain wall.
Locals called it the "Light of the End," believing it a death trap for those who followed its lure. Many who tried never returned.
Fifteen companions remained by Apolo’s side:
Apolo Serani
Eirikr Frostborn
Aelric Stornbade
Helmwulf Drachenfaust
Hoshiko Tatsuya
Nimue Moonshadow
Klaus Eisenhart
Netra Balhaven
Lysandra kalander
Sigrún Flameheart
Akihiko Morikage
Rowena Elfmberfall
Fernir Felnya
Seraphina Nachtlied
Ashuhura Nazala
Though supplies dwindled and fears grew, Apolo pressed on. They abandoned three who chose to return: Hoshiko, Nimue, and Klaus. The rest continued on foot, passing through a barren desert, encountering bleached skeletons of past explorers and losing their horses to exhaustion.
The Great Wall
At last, they stood before a towering mountain barrier. Apolo theorized it formed a vast circular rampart rather than a simple ridge. Choosing a narrow crevice, they ascended for days, breaching the first wall only to find another beyond.
Exhausted and low on provisions, tensions flared. Some urged retreat, but Apolo, who had begun fasting to conserve rations, convinced them forward. Beyond the second wall, patches of grass and circling storm clouds hinted at life.
Inside a rocky cave, they spotted birds—proof food might exist ahead. With Apolo unconscious from starvation, the group improvised traps to catch the birds. Three days later, Apolo awoke to nourishing soup made from their quarry, grateful to live another day.
Rested and refortified, they tackled the final, steepest wall. Losing a pack of supplies and watching comrades suffer, they debated abandoning a stray puppy carried by Netra. Apolo refused: the dog stayed.
At last, using a massive root as a foothold, they hauled themselves to the summit of the last wall—and gazed upon the world that lay beyond...
