Paint Correction is a multi-step process that removes imperfections in a vehicle’s paint, such as swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, and other defects. At LL Auto Detail, LLC, we aim for high-end results, on Daily Driven, Luxury and Exotic vehicles.
Here's our step-by-step guide to performing a professional color correction:
Before beginning the correction process, evaluate the paint condition and consult with the client.
Inspect the vehicle under proper lighting (LED or sunlight).
Use a paint depth gauge to measure clear coat thickness.
Identify problem areas (swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, water spots, etc.).
Use a handheld gloss meter (optional) to document the paint’s starting condition.
Explain realistic correction levels based on paint thickness.
Offer different correction options (1-step, 2-step, or multi-step correction).
Recommend ceramic coating (e.g., Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light) after correction for protection.
We can use Customer's favorite brand aswell.
Proper surface prep ensures maximum effectiveness during correction.
Use pH-neutral snow foam to break down surface dirt.
Use soft microfiber wash mitts for a two-bucket method wash.
Rinse thoroughly to remove all residue.
Use an iron remover (e.g., CarPro IronX) to dissolve embedded iron particles.
Apply tar remover for stubborn spots if needed.
Use a fine-grade clay bar or clay mitt with lubricant to remove bonded contaminants.
Wipe down with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution to remove remaining residue.
Apply masking tape to rubber seals, plastic trim, emblems, and other sensitive areas.
Choose an inconspicuous area and test different pad and polish combinations.
Start with a medium-cut polish and adjust aggressiveness as needed.
1-Step Correction (Enhancement Polish)
Use a DA polisher with a finishing pad and all-in-one polish (e.g., Sonax Perfect Finish).
Removes light swirls and improves gloss but may not correct deeper defects.
2-Step Correction (Cut and Polish)
First pass: Cutting compound with a microfiber cutting pad (e.g., Meguiar’s M105 or Rupes DA Coarse).
Second pass: Finishing polish with a foam finishing pad (e.g., Menzerna 3800 or Rupes Uno Pure).
Multi-Step Correction (Heavy Defect Removal)
Use a rotary polisher for deep defects (only if necessary).
Wet sanding may be required for extreme cases (1000-3000-5000 grit, followed by polish).
Work in 2’x2’ sections, using slow, overlapping passes.
Keep the polisher at speed 3-5 for cutting and 2-4 for finishing.
Check work frequently with a paint inspection light.
Use IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) wipe-down to check for true correction results.
Inspect under multiple light sources (LED, sunlight, and paint depth gauge).
Ceramic Coating (Recommended for Luxury/Exotic Vehicles)
Apply Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light for long-term protection.
Cures for 12-24 hours before exposure to water.
Wax Coating (Recommended for all Vehicles)
Apply Meguiar's M7 Mirror Glaze Show Car Glaze for medium-to-long term protection
Cures for 2-4 hours before exposure to water.
Sealant (Alternative Protection Option)
Use SiO2-infused spray sealants for short-term protection (e.g., Gtechniq C2V3).
Apply with a microfiber applicator and buff off with a clean microfiber towel.
Inspect the vehicle together with the client.
Discuss maintenance recommendations (pH-neutral washes, drying techniques).
Offer optional maintenance plans or VIP Membership for recurring care.
