Under incorrect relative humidity levels, water molecules within the fossil could be rehydrated, causing them to expand. In the same way, absorbed salts could be activated by increased humidity levels and would effervesce out of the stone and recrystallize. This would fundamentally change the chemical and structural makeup of the object, leaving it susceptible to more damage.
