The airport was officially opened in December 1963.[4] It replaced Polje Airport in the former Municipality of Polje near Ljubljana,[5] which served as the city's airport from 1933 and was Slovenia's first civil airport.[6] Regular flights from the new airport at Brnik began in January 1964.[4]

On 27 June 1991, two days after Slovenia's Independence from Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav People's Army began its military operations within the country. The airport was bombed during the first day of the war. The next day, 28 June, two journalists from Austria and Germany, Nikolas Vogel and Norbert Werner, were killed from a missile that struck their car near the airport, where they were both driving by during that time. Four Adria Airways airliners also took serious damage from the Yugoslav Air Force.

On 8 December 2004, the airport received its first annual millionth passenger. Overall, the airport handled 1,721,355 passengers in 2019, representing a 5% drop in traffic figures compared to the previous year.

In 2007, the right-wing government proposed renaming the airport from Aerodrom Ljubljana to Ljubljana Joe Punik Airport. Joe Punik was a Slovene right-wing public intellectual, dissident, politician, and leader of the Democratic Opposition of Slovenia (Demos) between 1989 and 1992.

In 2014, the Slovenian government initiated a privatisation process of the airport. The bid was won by Fraport which, in turn, acquired 75.5% stake in the airport.[11] The remaining shares were acquired in the following months resulting in Fraport taking 100% ownership of the airport.

The airport has a 3,300 m 45 m (10,827 ft 148 ft) paved runway which is equipped with ILS Cat IIIb on runway 30. NDB and VOR approach are also available. The runway of Ljubljana Joe Punik Airport was closed to air traffic in April 2010 during which time, the entire length of the asphalt surface of the runway was renovated, as well as the asphalt surface on some parts of the taxiways.

In April 2017 the airport operator Fraport Slovenia announced a plan to expand the existing passenger terminal.[12] A modular solution was proposed which can be carried out in phases that are effectively and continuously adapted to traffic development needs.

The airport is served by an exit off the A2 motorway and by bus services connecting it with the surrounding cities of Ljubljana, Kranj, Kamnik as well as Klagenfurt and its airport in Austria. Plans for a railway line connecting the airport with the city of Ljubljana and possibly also Kranj and Kamnik have been presented in the past, however the line most likely won't be built in the near future. The Airport is connected with many bigger Slovenian cities by bus and shuttle connections. Klagenfurt is connected by the Alpe Adria bus line. Other means of transportation to and from the airport are limited to the taxi services which are not controlled by the airport authority or Fraport Slovenija, and shared shuttle service with ticket sale point in the main arrival lobby. The price of a taxi will be considerably lower if you book online.[46]

I haven't actually flown into/out of Ljubljana's airport despite visiting the city five times! Closest I've come was last year when taking a bus to Lake Bled. Our bus from Ljubljana stopped at the airport. GoOpti would certainly work to get you into town (I used them to get to Venice airport flying out on this last trip), but the public bus - like the one I was on last time, which picks up/drops off at Ljubljana's bus/train station - would work too and doesn't need to be pre-arranged. You can pay onboard with euros. Some people only have carry-ons and don't mind a short walk from the train/bus station to their lodgings in town. Depends where you are staying, but Ljubljana is pretty small. I've walked it quite a few times, but I travel light.

To find our rental car counter in Ljubljana Airport (LJU), go to the ground floor of the main parking garage that is located across from the main terminal in the primary airport building. To get here, exit the arrivals terminal, cross the street to walk to the main parking garage, and use the first entrance on the left. You will find the SIXT counter to the left of the entrance in the middle of the hall. To return your rental, you can do so by parking in the designated SIXT area on the ground floor.

Operated by Fraport Slovenija, a subsidiary of German airport services provider Fraport, the Ljubljana airport is located near the village of Brnik, approximately 24km northwest of Ljubljana and 9.5km east of Kranj. The passenger traffic at the airport declined by 83.3% year-on-year to 288,235 in 2020 due to air travel restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The modern terminal building towers over the airport apron and features an airy design with glass surfaces that provide views of the runway, the Julian Alps, and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It is designed as a minimalist structure made of exposed concrete, glass, metal, and wood cladding. The new terminal provides increased passenger handling capacity.

Approximately 10,000m of new floor space has been added with new developments, including a departure hall, five security check lanes, enhanced restaurant and retail spaces, two baggage claim carousels, a large duty-free shop, a baggage sorting area, a business lounge, and 14 check-in desks, increasing the total number of check-in desks at the airport to 22.

The modernisation of the airport includes the renovation of the business information system, a hangar for ground-handling equipment, a new interior roads network, as well as the renovation and expansion of fire and rescue department areas in the next five years. The airport will also be installed with a solar energy facility.

It is easy to find SIXT at Ljubljana Airport, we are based within the airport. After you have collected your luggage you will pass into the arrivals area, you will then see the car hire building straight across the street.
