The image above is of an iterative garden, my own. I started work on it when I moved back to Chicago after having lived and worked in Europe for over twenty years. The goal was to create a propagator space for Monarchs butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. It involved a lot of planning - from the fencing to the construction of the raised bed to the selection of plants that attract the desired fauna. It involved collaboration with other gardeners about what plants work well in Illinois, what was beneficial, what was invasive. And it involves constant iteration in search of happy places for individual specimens, to observe what is working - and more importantly, what's not, understanding why and adjusting the plan.
It's really a metaphor for my work process: immersion in the problem; identification of sources of information that speak to the problem; collaboration with others on possible approaches; painstaking execution; and constant monitoring about what's working and what it isn't.
