➜ Li, Wen-Hao
The artist LI, WEN-HAO is a Taiwanese, an islander and an interdisciplinary contemporary performance artist. His practice includes contemporary dance, performance art, music, photography and history research. Holding the bachelor degree of law and master of performing art theory, he pays extra attention to the power and political interactions among multiple disciplines.
In the practice of LI, he studied the ocean histories through the lens of “island” isolated yet connected by the ocean. Surrounded by waters, Taiwan island have been a place where regimes and colonialism met and competed by currents and wind since Age of Discovery. Cross-cultures and cross-disciplines can be seen everywhere in Taiwan which shows the special situation of layers of history and politics. Now, Taiwan is still a hot spot of geopolitics in 21st Century.
By studies of ocean history, LI focuses on pop music and foods cultures not only in Taiwan but also cultures from Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, America and Indo-Pacific nations where waters compile. He combines images, music, performance, dance, cooking and archive in performance to deconstruct the regime-centered history and to manifest the qualities of ocean where people connected and sharing.
Lately, his work From Musical Collaboration to Interpersonal Collaboration was nominated for the 20th Taishin Art Award. His master’s thesis “An Experiment of Degree Zero: A Study of Dance Work Jérôme Bel” was honored with Taiwan Dance Research Society Chin-Lin Award in 2022. He is also the artist in residency in Thinker’s Studio for The Connect with SEA 2.0.
