2023
salvaged wood, acrylic paint
Shown in Hawthorne Contemporary Gray Area accompanied by artist statement:
From the forest I hear my father calling. Barefooted but with a winter jacket on, I exit the house through the back door and find myself on the porch, listening for his voice. Again, from the forest, I hear him. I cross the yard, go over the ditch, and wander into the woods. In the clearing far ahead of me I see my father. He is waving and calling my name, surrounded by vines and thorns. As I march toward him, nearly there, I feel a tug on my foot. A delicate loop of thorns have wrapped themselves around my ankle as if asking me to stop. Asking me to reconsider.
I never made it to my father.
This is the only memory I can recall without certainty of its basis in reality. Whether this event is a dream, a memory, or somewhere in between I doubt I’ll ever know. But I do know that whatever this recollection is, it reminds me of a time long gone. Perhaps a time I will never know again. It takes me back to the time I trusted my father.

2024
salvaged cabinet door, acrylic paint
Each day feels as if I am a completely new and different person picking up from where someone else left off. This is a dissociative trait that I seek to give meaning to through an artistic manifestation. The figure sitting at the table is Present me, waiting to be replaced. The figure standing with the gun is Tomorrow’s Me. And the figure slumped on the floor is Yesterday’s Me. The tables and chairs are reminiscent of tables and chairs I spent significant time at as a child and teenager. The snackboard and cappuccinos are there because not only do I love snackboards and cappuccinos, but it holds another gun: allowing Today’s Me to end themself if they do not want to wait for Tomorrow’s Me to do the deed. Or if Tomorrow’s Me cannot carry out the action. The dog in the left chair is Indy’s Angel (my recently deceased pet dog) who is my present advisor. The cat in the right chair is Whiskers’ Angel (my deceased pet cat) who is my past advisor. And the great grey owl is my future advisor. The figures in the door are Future Me (left) and Past Me (right). The inside setting is to reinforce the feeling of being trapped in this cycle. And the figures on the walls are odes to all my Yesterday-selves.
