Towards a
LivingLab in the
Magdalena River
Towards a
LivingLab in the
Magdalena River
A scientific workshop, organized by Uni Kiel doctoral students and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of BMBF's Colombia Day, was held from October 16th to the 18th, 2024, in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Organised by Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and supported by Universidad de la Costa CUC and Universidad del Norte
Sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research - BMBF
About the workshop
This event was a 3-day workshop for young scientists and represents the initial phase of co-experience towards the establishment of a Living Lab in the area of influence of the Magdalena River, the largest and most important river of Colombia. During this phase, the overall objective was to lay the foundation for a better understanding of the processes at the land-water interface of the Caribbean's largest tributary, the Magdalena River, and its area of influence, through multidisciplinary exchange of ideas between Colombian and German researchers.
Objectives
To identify key inter- and transdisciplinary research areas and collaboration opportunities essential for an enhanced understanding of the processes within the Magdalena River and its influence zone.
To develop an action plan for interdisciplinary collaboration between young researchers in exploring the Magdalena River and its influence area.
This includes identifying common research interests, defining roles and responsibilities for each expert team, and designing joint research activities.
To establish a collaborative working network between Colombian and German experts and young researchers for knowledge exchange and technology transfer, aimed at improving the understanding of processes in the Magdalena River and its influence zone.
This entails organizing future regular workshops and conferences, creating online cooperation tools and platforms, as well as promoting researcher mobility between both countries to conduct joint studies.
Calling all young and early career scientists interested in coastal studies!
Although the workshop has already taken place, we would like to continue fostering the development of a strong network of early career scientists who are interested in contributing to the establishment of a Living Lab along the Magdalena River and its surrounding areas. While centered around a coastal theme, we are looking towards an inclusive array of transdisciplinary topics. Any and all work related to:
Coastal protection measures/ nature-based solutions and coastal management
Hydrodynamics, morphodynamics and sediment transport
Water quality
Biodiversity and ecology
Sea level change impacts
Anthropogenic impacts
Offshore structures
Fisheries
Shipping and navigation
... and more are of course invited. Maybe your exciting topic isn't even on our radar - yet!
