The Fauquier County 4-H Livestock Service Learning Projects started in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Families were looking for ways to keep their children engaged in home-based hands-on activities. Meanwhile, demand at local food banks spiked and supply chain issues led to shortages of proteins at local grocery stores. In 4-H, we pledge our hands to larger service and we aim keep youth engaged in hands-on educational activities and so. So in 2020, 30 4-H'ers signed up to raise 60 broilers and 190 laying hens so that they could donate the resulting proteins to local food banks.
Since 2020, this project has grown to include 150 youth and large livestock projects as well. Through participation in these projects youth learn about raising livestock while also learning life skills such as responsibility, record keeping, goal setting, and civic engagement.
