Born and raised in Saline, Michigan, Chris began playing the bass in 5th grade under the direction of Bob Phillips, Erin Hansen, and Ben Culver. As he grew as a musician, he began to study privately with Anthony Stoops and later Barton Dunning. After being introduced to jazz in middle school, Chris was hooked on the genre and performed as a member of the York University Combo directed by Vincent York in Ann Arbor.
Upon graduating high school, Chris pursued a degree in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Michigan. While at U of M, he studied bass with Diana Gannett studied pedagogy with Drs. Michael Hopkins, Colleen Conway and others. He has recently completed Master's Degree in Music Education at the University of Illinois.
In addition to his performing and teaching classical music. Chris enjoys playing and teaching music of many styles. He is on faculty at the "Anything but Classical Orchestra" Summer Retreat in East Kentwood along with the Chelsea Middle School Fiddle Camp. In his time student teaching in Chelsea with Jed Fritzemeier, Chris also taught and wrote arrangements for the Chelsea House Orchestra; an extracurricular Celtic fiddle band.
Chris is currently an elementary strings teacher in the Rockwood School District. Prior to this position, Chris worked on the staff at Lindbergh Schools in St. Louis, MO and taught students in grades 4-12 and served as the director of the Lindbergh High School Strolling Strings, an eclectic styles ensemble, that plays 20-25 shows annually in the St. Louis area and toured to Nashville, TN, Louisville, KY, and Stirling, Scotland
Outside of teaching, Chris has performed with community orchestras, jazz ensembles and various popular music groups. His most recent project was as the bassist for St. Louis folk band The Good Deeds who released an album, Horizons in 2017.
