Introduction

The Goddess Lakshmi.

(Source)

My dearest Lakshmi, you have done a great many things in your lifetimes. But, now that you have returned to us, to be part of the Brahman once more, you have forgotten yourself. Let us relate to you the stories of your lives, for you are fierce and proud, faithful and loving, and so very, very strong.

As Lakshmi, it was your blessing that allowed Indra to keep the demons at bay. However, he was arrogant, and for that he lost your favor, and you left. The gods didn't know what to do in your absence, so they churned the Milky Ocean for a thousand years, trying to get you back. My darling, you are not one to be trifled with, and your sense of dharma guides you.

As Sita, you were the faithful companion of an avatar of Vishnu. His name was Rama in that lifetime. You stuck with him through thick and thin, and no matter the circumstances, no matter how difficult your situation got, you stayed true to him.

As Padmavati, you loved Vishnu by the name of Venkatesha. But I suppose the universe did not remember the power of your wrath. A sage insulted you, and Venkatesha, the poor soul, did nothing about it and lost you once again. He suffered in your absence until you took pity on him. He was overjoyed with your return. He finally learned not to insult your pride.

Through your stories, your love for Vishnu has been apparent, and you have found him lifetime after lifetime. But you and he are not parts of a whole. You have proven far too feisty to be tied to him when it doesn't suit you. You are not one to be contended with; your absence leaves a hole that cannot be filled. But we are glad to have you home, my sweet, strong hero.
