Loyola University Microscopy and Optics Society is an inclusive group based out of Loyola University of Chicago Biomedical Graduate School in Maywood, Illinois.
LUMOS Co-Founders:
The main goal of LUMOS is to make discussion and instruction on microscopy constructive, accessible, and exciting. We hope to disseminate microscopy knowledge and methods to fellow students and faculty at Loyola, as well as curious high school and undergraduate students as well. This effort to broaden the scope of this society will function to create opportunities for young, underrepresented individuals in STEM.
Lectures by LUMOS members will provide instruction on basic optics, microscopy modalities and imaging techniques.
Seminars by innovators in the field of microscopy will provide exciting new frontiers in the field.
Videos of the seminars and lectures allows for many more people to benefit from these talks than those who can attend. Especially undergraduate and high school student who are not able to be on campus.
Our outreach program will raise funds to sponsor local high school students for summer internships at the Loyola Biomedical Graduate School. Students should not have to choose between a summer job and gaining research experience before competitive undergraduate applications. This program will provide an opportunity to acquire both. Long term goals of outreach to these same local schools during the school year will better prepare the prospective summer interns and impact a greater number of students.
