I see my camera as a way to influence my little corner of the world. I've noticed that we remember people, places, and moments through the photographs we see of them. These images shape how we see ourselves and our lives. Photos preserve our memories, make life feel meaningful, and are a reminder of how much we are loved. We become more like the confident, joyful, radiant, portraits we see hanging on our walls. This is something I want for everyone.
I don't like to be awkward, and I'm sure you feel the same way. In my years as a dancer and choreographer, I learned how to stand to project confidence and ease, and I am adept at showing my clients how to pose and move to create the most flattering postures. Photos always turn out better when you are comfortable and relaxed - and hopefully without sounding braggy about it- I'm pretty good at helping you and your family feel that way. I've been a high school teacher for almost two decades, so I am sure I can motivate your kids or your husband to smile for my camera.
I'm thrifty. Seriously; I don't like to waste time or money, and I imagine you don't either. Few families can really afford several hundred dollars a few times a year on something that doesn’t clean your house, make dinner, or drive you to work? Right? And who can really risk that much money on a preschooler who may or may not nap before family portraits? I aspire to being the kind of photographer I would want to hire: effecient, affordable, and willing to see my family just as we are.
Just some informal ideas that might help guide you.
It is important to know what you are paying for when you hire a photographer, and it is helpful to know what to ask. While most people consider how many hours of service they are paying for and what will be the total cost, many couples unknowingly forget some of the most important questions. I know I did. Some of these questions are:
Do I like this person? - Wedding photography is pretty intimate. We are with you throughout your wedding day from the preparations to the last fading rays of sunset. You should select someone who makes you feel comfortable and confident.
Can this photographer find the special moments? - You will want to remember every part of your wedding day, but you will probably be talking to friends and family, dancing, kissing, and looking beautiful. You wan to find a photographer who will do more than just put you in poses; you need someone who will watch for and capture the moments that become your memories of this momentous day. Does your photographer have evidence of fantastic candid or documentary style photographs?
Can this photographer tell your sassy best friend or slightly drunk groomsman where to stand without stressing you out? Your photographer needs to be able to communicate clearly and easily the expectations for your wedding portraits so that you can get on with the party. And similarly, your photographer should be equally able to blend in to the crowd so that you feel relaxed enough to show your true emotions and be yourself on your big day.
How much editing will your photographer contribute to your wedding images and does this photographer's editing style look beautiful to my eye? Some photographers simply give couples every image straight out of the camera. Other photographers have a specific number of images they promise. While most wedding photographers may produce beautiful portraits, some photographers make every image look too gold, too grainy or too vibrant. Some give you choices about how this process happens and what the finished product will look like. You should find the editing style and process that works for your values and aesthetic.
Can this photographer show us how to look our best? We all love our partners, but how many of us think they look awkward and uncomfortable in pictures? I know mine does- but don't tell him I said so. You want to pick a photographer who will tell you where to stand, how to stand, where to put your hands and your eyes, and even what to think about to create the best pictures. Make sure you find someone who is confident directing you.
What type of gear does this photographer use? While skill and talent are important, not all cameras are equally equipped to handle the low light of a dance floor or the wide angles of wedding party. You likely want a photographer who has a a full frame camera and portfolio demonstrating the quality of images you expect to receive. Plus, you should ensure that your photographer has a backup camera in case of mechanical failure. Don't hesitate to ask questions about this technical information.
How and when will my photographs be delivered? Some photographers provide digital images through flash drives or online galleries. Others do consultations after the editing process and ask you to select your print purchase. You should find the distribution style that fits your needs and budget. Some photographers have a gallery ready in a few days while others take months to finish. What is your priority?
