Dear Families,
What a fantastic week we've had celebrating Book Week! Our Little Leaders enjoyed a special excursion to the Cloncurry Shire Hall, where they participated in a shared reading experience that sparked their imagination and love for stories.
Looking ahead to Weeks 8 and 9, our focus in literacy will be on learning the letters v, x, and y, along with their sounds. We will also introduce tricky words such as put, as, do, like, and very to help build reading confidence.
In mathematics, our learners will continue exploring how to identify and compare the attributes of objects — including length, capacity, and mass. Through hands-on activities, they will practice making direct comparisons and explaining their reasoning, strengthening their measurement skills and critical thinking.
We are excited to see our Little Leaders continue to grow and thrive through these engaging learning opportunities!
To wrap up Book Week excitingly, Our Little Leaders were joined by their Year 1 and 2 friends to attend the Cloncurry Shire Council reading with Humphrey B Bear! Our Little Leaders loved identifying the characters, setting and events that occured in the storytime.
This week in math we have continued our unit on Measurement. Our Little Learners have learnt to identify and compare attributes of objects including length and mass, using direct comparisons and communicating reasoning. Take a look below at our students experimenting with measurement!
Religion:
In Week 4 we started to look at our new unit of Religion focussing on Choosing love, forgiveness and compassion. Over the coming weeks we will learn that Christians believe God created people with the freedom to choose between good and bad, right and wrong. We will explore how Jesus taught key messages about love, compassion and forgiveness, including the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37). Jesus taught that love of God and others is the greatest commandment. Christians are called to follow the teachings of Jesus.
This week in Literacy we are learning the letter z and the corresponding sound as well as ch, v, x and y. The Tricky Words focus will be go, so, no, this and then.
In math we will begin a new unit of work on measurement. Our Little Leaders will begin to identify and compare attributes of objects and events, including length, capacity, mass and duration, using direct comparisons and communicating reasoning.
Book Week - Week 7
In Week 7, St Joseph’s will be celebrating Book Week. As part of our Book Week Celebrations, our Little Leaders will be participating in a Dress Up Parade, which will take place on Tuesday at 8.40am in the primary courtyard. We look forward to seeing our students come dressed as their favourite book characters and sharing the joy of reading together as a school community.
Father's Day, Classroom/Assembly - Week 8
In Week 8, we will be celebrating Father’s Day with a number of special events. Our Father’s Day Stall will run each day throughout the week, and on Thursday 4th September, we invite all families to join us for a Father’s Day Breakfast from 7.45am in the Primary Eating Area. To make this a big community morning and in response to past feedback, we’ve tied a few celebrations together to minimise the need for multiple school visits. Following breakfast, families are warmly welcome to visit Open Classrooms from 8.00–8.20am as part of our usual “Learning Breakfast.” We will then gather for a whole-school Assembly from 8.30–9.30am in the MMS (Preps will be singing a Father's Day song!), held that day because Friday 5th September is a pupil free day.
Dear Families,
I cannot believe we are half way through the term again!
This week during our explicit literacy block, we learned three new digraphs: ‘qu’ as in queen, ‘sh’ as in shell and ‘ee’ as in tree. Our Little Leaders had a blast identifying these sounds in words, practicing their pronunciation, and even writing them down. We also introduced four new Tricky Words – these are words that don’t always follow regular spelling rules and need to be remembered by sight: call, all, ball, little.
Mary MacKillop Feast Day
In Week 4, our Little Leaders were lucky enough to have a visit from both Cricket Australia and ALF. These experiences are so valuable to fostering a community of team building skills.
Welcome to Term 3!
In Literacy this past week, we explored the letter w and its corresponding sound. We were also introduced to our first digraph, ck, which is two letters that make one sound. Our Little Learners really enjoyed learning the new sound and the fun actions that help us remember it.
Looking ahead to Weeks 4 and 5, we will continue learning about digraphs, focusing on double letters: ll, ff, and ss. We will also introduce new Tricky Words: have, of, here, and with.
Literacy Rotations will continue from Monday to Thursday, 9:00 to 9:30 am. We would love to welcome parent helpers during these sessions. If you're available to support, please let me know. Your help truly makes a difference.
In Math, we have been working on subtraction word problems. During Week 3, we role-played different subtraction scenarios within 10. We will continue this focus into Week 4 and then spend Week 5 consolidating our understanding of both addition and subtraction.
It was amazing to see all the wonderful costumes as we celebrated 100 Days of Prep. Our Little Learners had the best day, joining with their Year 6 buddies and participating in a range of fun rotations.
Today, Prep joined with our Year 6 Buddies to begin the celebration of 100 Days of Prep!
We split our cohort into small groups, with half the students working together to make delicious scones for our shared morning tea tomorrow. Meanwhile, the other groups collaborated on creative collections of 100 items, highlighting the progress our Prep students have made over the past 100 days. It was wonderful to see the teamwork, joy, and sense of accomplishment as the Preps and their Year 6 Buddies celebrated this special milestone together.
On Friday, our Little Leaders joined the rest of the school to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
We had the opportunity to sing our song Ancient Legacy at the NAIDOC Parade.
After first lunch, our Little Leaders participated in NAIDOC activities to celebrate and appreciate the importance of NAIDOC Week.
Welcome to Term 3!
Dear Families,

We are excited to begin Literacy Rotations this term. These are daily sessions designed to support targeted reading and writing practice.
We would love to welcome parent helpers to support these sessions from 9:00 to 9:30 am. If you are available to help, please let me know. Your support makes a real difference in our learning program.
On Tuesday the 22nd of July, we are celebrating a special milestone with our Year 6 buddies — 100 Days of Primary School for our Little Learners and the Final 100 Days for our Year 6 friends.
To celebrate, we invite all students to come dressed as an elderly person. Grey hair, glasses, walking sticks, moustaches, headscarves, flat caps or any other fun costume ideas are welcome. We are looking forward to a day filled with fun and laughter.
On Friday the 25th of July, our students will be recognised with a certificate to celebrate this milestone.
In Religion, we will explore Jesus’ key messages about love, compassion, forgiveness and the freedom to make good, bad, right and wrong choices. Our Little Leaders will read The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) and reflect on its meaning and how it applies to their own lives.
This term in Science, we begin a new unit on Chemical Sciences. Students will:
Recognise that objects are made from different materials
Describe observable properties of those materials
Make safe observations using their senses
Explore how people use questions and observations to learn about the world around them
This term in English, we are exploring a variety of texts through reading, viewing and making meaningful connections. Students will learn that texts can come in many forms such as signs, books and digital media. We will also look at the purpose behind imaginative and informative texts.
We will:
Identify familiar texts like stories and informative texts and understand their purpose
Recognise differences between imaginative and informative texts
Share ideas about stories and images in literature
Reflect on experiences that are similar or different to our own
Students will engage with texts by First Nations Australians and authors and illustrators from across Australia and the world. Some of the featured texts include How the Birds Got Their Colours, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, The Wonky Donkey and The Gruffalo.
In Mathematics, we will continue learning about addition and subtraction to 10. Later in the term, we will explore:
Measurement including length, mass, duration and capacity
Positional language, describing where things are in relation to themselves and others in familiar spaces
We will also consolidate our knowledge of numbers to 20, including identifying numbers that come before and after, and understanding the concepts of one more and one less.
