Dressing for the Occasion

Our clothing projects to others meanings and values. Wearing torn jeans has a different feeling than wearing a jacket and tie or a semi-formal dress. What is important is for students to consider how they want to project an image of themselves.

If an LI employee determines that a student’s clothing does not meet the dress code standards, options may include

• having someone bring a change of clothes to school immediately,

• going to the school’s clothing storage area in the counseling office to borrow clothes, or

• having the student remain in the Campus Life Office until the student can come into dress code.

LI honors religious accommodations to dress; families must contact the Dean of Students to arrange for such accommodations. If there are extenuating circumstances preventing the student from following the dress code,please have an adult contact the Dean of Students before attending classes.

Academic Dress

Worn from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and during official school functions such as open house and parents’ nights, academic dress is the student’s professional wardrobe. The primary purpose of academic dress code for school is to improve the academic performance of the individual student and the academic community and to honor each student’s individual choices within the norms of the school community.

Dress Code Guidelines

We expect all clothing and accessories to:

• be intended for an educational or professional environment, not a recreational environment;

• be safe;

• fit appropriately;

• be clean and well kept, free of holes and frayed areas; and

• be free of any alcohol, drug, and/or tobacco advertising, and any insulting or threatening words, phrases, pictures, and/or symbols.

Guidelines for tops:

• Shoulders, cleavage, midriff, and skin between neckline, shoulders, and back should be covered.

• No clothing designed as underwear or sleepwear 

Guidelines for bottoms:

• Hemlines must be no more than four inches above the top of the kneecap.

• Must be worn at the waist or at the top of the hips.

• No sweatpants, wind pants, or flannel pants.

• No bottoms designed as underwear or sleepwear .

• Shorts are permitted only during certain times of the year. Dates will be announced.

• Leggings must be full length and may be substituted for nylons or tights only.

Guidelines for accessories, headwear, and footwear:

• Hats, hoods, headwear, or sunglasses are not permitted inside classrooms and other teaching areas.

• Jewelry with spikes or sharp points or sharp collars or any other accessory that could be a hazard is not permitted.

• Flip-flops or other shoes or sandals intended for beachwear are not permitted

Athletic Dress

Worn during interscholastic and intramural athletic practice and competition as well as school activities requiring strenuous physical activity (such as aerobics, dance, weightlifting, and yoga), appropriate athletic dress is specified by the coach, teacher, or advisor in charge of the activity. On game days, jerseys may be worn by players. Unless otherwise specified, teams traveling to away games will wear academic dress in transit as representatives of the school.

Formal Dress

A few events call for formal dress, such as Commencement, Honors Induction ceremonies, and formal dances. Featured participants in such events should wear special garments, such as academic gowns or more formal dress, but in general, those attending formal ceremonies or activities will be expected to wear clothing as listed in the academic dress code. Some events may require a tie, an academic robe, or a jacket; faculty will inform students of those requirements when necessary.

“Pajama” or other Optional Dress Days

On special occasions, students will be permitted to wear casual dress to school when they make a specified contribution to the charitable cause announced as the beneficiary of the day. This rule is in keeping with our tradition of raising funds for worthy causes through dress down days. 

On Optional Dress days, we expect all clothing and accessories to be safe, fit appropriately, be clean and well kept, free of holes and frayed areas, and free of alcohol, drug and/or tobacco advertising, and any obscene or threatening words, phrases, pictures, and/or symbols. In addition, we expect that all clothing will cover the same area of the body as specified in the regular dress code. Students choosing not to participate in Optional Dress days are required to be in the academic dress code.
