Literacy Strategies for Secondary Social Studies Classrooms

Type of Literacy Strategy:

Reading Comprehension (during reading, and post-reading)

Reading Level:

All Secondary Reading Levels; Based on how the sketch illustration is used in the class, students at lower reading levels will be able to draw more or less illustrations and use more or less annotations. Students are able to choose if they want any guiding annotation or if they would just prefer to draw.

Prep Time:

5 minutes to explain activity and assign reading

Sketch Illustration in Use -

Students will be given a piece of paper and writing utensils (or markers/crayons depending on resources), and a text to read.
In groups, students will read aloud or individually until the group has read the passage
Students will draw illustrations showing the passage’s story/narration. (students should drawn more illustrations to show more detail or less to draw a bigger picture/summary of the passage/text.) Students can also drawn as a group if preferred.
Once students have made their illustrations, students will share with their group of what they drew and tell the story in their own words as they show the drawings. Each person should share their illustration.
As a large group/class, volunteers can show their illustrations to the class and retell the story along with their drawings.

How to Fit into a Social Studies Classroom:

In a social studies classroom, one can use the sketch illustration on occasions when there is perhaps a descriptive passage of an event or a physical location. The description of an apartment building in New York by Jacob Riis would be a great way for students to sketch, or sketching out a historic event/court case.
