Type of Literacy Strategy:
Speaking (discussion and debate)
Reading Level:
All Secondary Reading Levels; Based on how the PVLEGS is used in the class, students at lower reading levels or ELs or students with anxiety of public speaking could be shy or intimidated by speaking in front of a group, but starting the class by speaking in small groups and then then leading to a whole class speaking assignment could help ease them into a larger assignment with practice so they know expectations.
Prep Time:
Depends on depth of use. 10-20 minutes for one-page guide.

How to Fit into a Social Studies Classroom:
One could use this rubric and way of thinking about speaking skills for any presentations, debates, or speeches that students would give in my class. Front the start of a class, be clear that to start, these are goals for all students then they are talking. Don't compare students to each other, but their individual progress throughout the year. Using these as goals for a rubric, students in a social studies class could focus more on content than the rubric which might help with anxiety and give them a more direct rubric on what they can focus on.
No strategy examples as PVLEGS is a way to format and guide speaking.
Please see blank templates as rubrics and handouts for students.
