All Secondary Reading Levels; Based on how the double bubble is used in the class, students at lower reading levels will be able to have a guided double bubble with a few bubbles filled out to help lead them to how to break down the groups or related areas to help ease frustration of finding connections in texts.
Prep Time:
2 min (printing) or NA if students create hand drawn charts
Double Bubble in Use -
- Students should have already seen a demonstration of the graphic by the teacher on a simple subject like using Minnesota and Wisconsin as the main two bubbles, and then finding things in common and things that are different and projecting this on the board to show students.
- Students will either draw their own bubbles (normally with two main bubbles to compare) and then create as many related bubbles that they can find. OR students will be given a printed our graphic with the bubbles and lines already created so the students will just fill in the organizer.
- Students should read their text and as they read (or after depending on instruction or preferences of students), fill out the organizer.
- After the reading, students should complete their organizers.
- If used for assessment, teacher can collect for understanding or for participation. But can also be used for guiding a discussion or debate when comparing the two main “sides” or compared terms.
How to Fit into a Social Studies Classroom:
In a social studies classroom, the double bubble strategy would be a great tool when students are learning about opposing political parties, different sides of a war, or Native American groups like the Dakota and Ojibwe to compare and find differences. Can be used to help guide students with comprehension and use the organizers later on to study for compare and contrast sections of an assessment.
