Support for the Preservation of the Lismore Presbyterian Church
I am writing to express my strong support for the preservation of the Lismore Presbyterian Church and for retaining this important historic building within the Lismore community.
The church is much more than an old bluestone building. It is a tangible part of Lismore’s history and represents the lives, stories, relationships and experiences of generations of local people. Its significance lies not only in its architecture and age, but in the role it has played as a place where the community has gathered, worshipped, celebrated, grieved and supported one another.
Buildings such as this are living historical environments. Their value comes from the connection between the physical place and the people who have used it over many generations. The church provides an opportunity for present and future generations to understand and experience the history of the community in a way that cannot be replicated by photographs, records or a museum display alone.
Importantly, the building can continue to have the potential to serve as a meaningful community space. Retaining the church as it is: pews, organ and other internal structures, will provide a place where people can return to mark significant moments in their lives—such as memorials, family reunions and other important gatherings. For many families, returning to a familiar place with deep personal and community connections is an important way of maintaining continuity between generations.
The preservation of the church would therefore protect not simply a structure, but a place of memory and belonging. It would allow people who have longstanding connections with Lismore to continue to gather there, while providing an opportunity for newer generations to develop their own connections with the building, its history and our community.
At a time when many historic buildings and community spaces are being lost or repurposed beyond recognition, retaining the Lismore Presbyterian Church as a functioning and accessible community place would be an important investment in the cultural heritage and social fabric of Lismore.
I strongly support efforts to retain the church within the community and to find a sustainable future for the building that respects its historical significance while allowing it to continue serving the people of Lismore.
This is a place where history is not simply remembered - it can continue to be lived.
