The majority of the research that goes into MBAM is based on what the Antivirus vendors are failing on most frequently . This allows us to keep a smaller database and prevents conflicts with antivirus software .

The table was compiled by AV-TEST, a German antivirus testing laboratory, which took advantage of its connections in the antivirus industry and inquired each vendor about its plans in regards to Windows 7 support.

Antivirus Vendors Plan To Support Windows 7 Post EOL

The compatibility issue arises when antivirus applications make unsupported calls into Windows kernel memory. These calls may cause stop errors (also known as blue screen errors) that make the device unable to boot. To help prevent these stop errors, Microsoft is currently only offering the January and February 2018 Windows security updates to devices that are running antivirus software that is from antivirus software vendors who have confirmed that their antivirus software is compatible by setting a required registry key.

Microsoft recommends all customers protect their devices by running a compatible and supported antivirus program. Customers can take advantage of built-in antivirus protection, Windows Defender Antivirus, for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 devices or a compatible third-party antivirus application.

In a default installation of Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, customers will not have an antivirus application installed by default. In these situations, Microsoft recommends installing a compatible and supported antivirus application such as Microsoft Security Essentials or a third-party anti-virus application.

A2: To help protect our customers from "blue screen" errors and unknown scenarios, Microsoft is requiring all antivirus software vendors to attest to the compatibility of their applications by setting a Windows registry key.

I no longer use Norton on my Windows 10 machine, and I find that the built-in Microsoft Defender (previously known as Windows Defender) and Microsoft Defender Firewall (previously known as Windows Firewall) aren't quite as user-friendly as Norton but they do a good job of protecting my system, even with their default settings. As I noted in my previous post, I do run Malwarebytes Premium in the background (with Settings | Security | Windows Security Center | Always Register Malwarebytes in the Windows Security Center turned OFF in Malwarebytes so Microsoft Defender acts as my primary antivirus), but that's only because I purchased a perpetual lifetime license for Malwarebytes Premium (not sold since March 2014) and don't have to pay an annual subscription fee.

If I didn't have that lifetime license for Malwarebytes I suspect I would just use Malwarebytes Free as an on-demand scanner and run a Malwarebytes scan once a week or so just to make sure Microsoft Defender didn't miss detecting any malware or PUPs (potentially unwanted programs like browser toolbars, adware, etc.). I've used Microsoft Defender as my primary antivirus for four years now and Malwarebytes Premium has never detected any malware or PUP that was missed by Microsoft Defender. The one thing I do like about Malwarebytes Premium, however, is the extra layers of protection the Web / Exploit / Ransomware Protection modules offer, which might be worth the cost of the annual subscription if this is something that's important to you. Note: If you have the Malwarebytes Browser Guard installed in your browser then this browser extension provides similar protection to Malwarebytes Premium's Web Protection module.

If and when your Norton 360 subscription expires, all you have to do is uninstall Norton 360 and your Microsoft Defender antivirus and Microsoft Defender Firewall should be automatically activated. My only suggestion is that after you uninstall Norton 360 from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features that you should wipe the last remnants off your system using the Norton Removal and Reinstall (NRnR) tool in Advanced Mode as instructed in the support article Download and Run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool for Windows (i.e., Advanced Options | Remove Only). Once Norton 360 has been wiped off your system and your system restarts your built-in Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Defender Firewall should be automatically enabled and protecting your system. Note: As a general rule, whenever you uninstall a third-party antivirus program like Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, etc. you should completely wipe your "old" antivirus off your system with the removal tool provided by the manufacturer so any remnants don't interfere with your "new" antivirus.

Yes, if you want Norton 360 (or any other antivirus like Microsoft Defender) to act as your primary real-time protection, which I assume you do, then you must turn OFF Settings | Security | Windows Security Center | Always Register Malwarebytes in the Windows Security Center in your Malwarebytes Premium settings. Kudos to bjm_ for posting an image of the auto-renewal link you should see when you sign in at If you still have problems please read the support article Stop Your Norton Subscription From Automatically Renewing I mentioned in my previous post.

I can't post images since I don't have an active subscription, but I'd suggest you log in to your OLD Norton Account at and confirm your auto-renewal is disabled as instructed in the support article Stop Your Norton Subscription From Automatically Renewing. Then follow the instructions in the support article Update Your Credit Card Information, but instead of entering your billing information just delete everything (or as much as it will allow you to delete) and click Save. As I said before, I'd keep this OLD account even after your current subscription expires and put up with a few weeks of annoying emails nagging you to renew your subscription - deleting the entire account might prevent you from signing in to this Norton forum as user david_S. and accessing your user profile at -s-0. NOTE: When I still had an active subscription I wasn't allowed to delete my billing information unless auto-renewal was turned off first.

Some antivirus software vendors offer basic versions of their products at no charge. These free versions generally offer basic antivirus and spyware protection, but more advanced features and protections are usually available only to paying customers.

Tech support scammers may try to trick you with a pop-up window that appears on your computer screen. It might look like an error message from your operating system or antivirus software, and it might use logos from trusted companies or websites. The message in the window warns you about a security issue on your computer and tells you to call a phone number to get help.

Check your firewall settings. I just recently came across this issue. Only user of my PC and could not get that hosts file to cooperate. Tried to delete and antivirus pops up telling me it has protected me. I use Avira, so I into my real-time protection configuration, check the security tab and "Protect windows hosts file from changes." is on by default. I uncheck, apply, do my change, then check it back and apply. No issue at all once that option was unchecked. 589ccfa754
