Hello, everyone, and welcome to our class. I'm Julie Cornett, your guide and facilitator and I am glad you're here!
This course preview covers some key things to help you prepare for our first day of class, so take a peek around and get comfortable.
Looking forward to seeing you in our online class very soon.
~Julie (You are welcome to call me Professor Cornett or Julie)
LIBR C111 is a 16-week online course. Each weekly module contains textbook readings, videos, discussions, and learning activities. All course readings and videos are provided for you. No need to purchase a textbook.
There are 2 mandatory zoom Library Workshops which count toward your grade.
Each week opens Monday morning and ends Sunday night, giving you an entire week to learn at your own pace. Joining our weekly discussions is an important part of class, so I ask you to post by Thursday each week and then check back in and engage with your classmates. I've designed the discussions to be lively, and thought-provoking but we need YOU to provide your unique perspective.
Completing the classwork is important, but I understand there may be weeks where you need to submit something late. To make sure you learn the concepts, I allow and encourage you to resubmit work to earn your best grade.

After taking LIBR C111, students will be more successful in their other courses, especially ones that require a research paper or project. This class will equip you with the skills to locate scholarly information sources, navigate through online misinformation cesspools, and cite your sources in MLA and APA like a pro.
You will be able to:
Critically evaluate information and media by applying standard criteria of media criticism, recognizing socio-cultural stereotypes as well as biases that privilege some sources of authority over others in terms of worldview, gender, and cultural orientation.
Reflect on the physiological impact of prolonged online media use such as addiction, brain function, and obesity.
Assess the psychological and socio-cultural effects of online media exposure and engagement throughout the life stages.
Strategically locate a variety of relevant information and media sources, contrasting characteristics of popular and scholarly sources in terms of audience, purpose, bias, accuracy, and currency.
Communicate information ethically and effectively across multiple platforms using correct citation and attribution formats
For personal or grade-related questions, message me using the Canvas Inbox. I will respond within 24 hours (if it's the weekend, a bit longer).
On the course Canvas, you'll learn how to schedule a time to meet with me via zoom. I'm happy to find times to meet with you and connect!
Pronto is an instant messaging tool integrated into Canvas. I encourage you to use Pronto to connect with your classmates and to ask for help from each other. You can ping me on Pronto too, but I don't have it installed on my phone, so the same 24 hour response time applies.
The class Q&A Forum is a great place to ask questions, especially when you want to share a screenshot as part of your question. I will check the Q&A Forum at least once a week; if you post a question there, you may want to send a Canvas Message to make sure I see your question sooner!
I became a librarian at a community college because I believe in the power of libraries and librarians to transform lives and support learning. Libraries have a rich history in advocacy, equity, and equality—they provide free access to expensive resources; their collections celebrate diversity; and they are founded on the values of free speech and privacy.
As a college librarian, I genuinely love to connect with students to support their academic and personal growth. I teach courses on library research and media literacy and my teaching philosophy is centered around empathy and respect. My learning spaces are designed to celebrate your diverse voices as you contribute to the information landscape. I also want to challenge you to apply a critical lens to the information you consume.
I’m here to support your journey by using our course’s communication tools to provide friendly nudges to encourage your learning. And I’m committed to using OERs to eliminate textbook costs in this course.
As your facilitator, I will be actively present in your professional learning experience.
I will create a positive and supportive environment where you will feel safe to learn and contribute.
I will respond to your questions within 24-hours and provide individualized support in response to your needs.
I will recognize the worldview I bring to our course and strive to grow, while acknowledging that being human – not perfect – is our goal.
As an educator and single mom, I understand that you are busy and that you have many competing priorities. When needed, I will be flexible to support your successful completion of this course.
Please log into our course at least twice per week to evaluate the work and due dates in the current module and engage with me and your fellow students. Your contributions matter and are appreciated.
Each week, plan to invest about 9 hours of time to the coursework and assignments.
Aim to submit all assignments on time and contact me directly early in the week to discuss your concern and come to an agreement about an extension if needed.
Be thoughtful in your interactions with peers while taking extra care to respect diverse perspectives.
Please be open to challenge your assumptions about things you're strongly opinionated about as you achieve a high level of information literacy!
Make it a goal to log into our course every Monday (or early in the week) to view the announcement and weekly module. Add the due dates to your calendar.
Plan to submit work early. I know you have a lot going on, but set a personal goal for yourself to submit all your assignments the day before the due date. Why? because life happens and computers glitch. You won't regret it, trust me.
Work through the modules from top to bottom. I've designed the course so that you'll be prepared for the activities and quizzes after having read the lectures and watched the videos. You're in good hands!
Communicate with me! Drop into my Zoom hours so we can share screens and I can help boost your confidence...even after (and especially after) you've missed an assignment due date. I look forward to my office hours and connecting with my students!
