Hi! I'm Mark Osdale, your Professor for Public Speaking. I will be flexible and provide as much support as I can. All I ask is that you do your best to get your work done on time, stay in touch and work to catch-up if you fall behind.
Please take 2 1/2 minutes to watch my video and learn a little about me. Then, explore the rest of the pages in this "Liquid Syllabus" to get prepared for our first week of class.
Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have about our class.

Days and Times
Where: Online Distance Education
When: Asynchronous
How long is the term? The term is 8 weeks. The class begins on October 16th and ends on December 7th.
Textbooks and Canvas
The text for our class is integrated into our Canvas shell, no activation code is required. We are using chapters from two different free-online textbooks:
Homework assignments will, most often, be due at 11:59 p.m.
Every Monday, visit the Canvas Module Overview page for the next week of our class. Review the assignments that will be due and note the due dates. Complete the "My weekly plan" assignment so you can coordinate all of the other obligations in your life with the assignments that will be due. If you find that you have other life obligations that will make it impossible to complete one or more assignments on time, let me know and we'll work out a different plan.
Complete the homework assignments on time. In this course, if you fall behind you will become overwhelmed very quickly. If you find that you are having trouble completing the work on time, please come see me (on Zoom) and we'll develop a plan to help you succeed.
Avoid Procrastination: Due to the anxiety that most of us feel related to giving speeches, we often experience avoidance and denial that results in procrastination. When you feel yourself beginning to ignore, avoid or deny work for this class remind yourself that these behaviors are your speech anxiety trying to protect you from a scary situation then take a deep breath, tell yourself that everything will be okay, and do the work.
Download the Canvas Student app and use it to check in on the course Monday-Saturday.
I'll give you loads more tips when we get started in announcements.

This is the preferred method of contact for all class business. I'm usually pretty quick with replies, and generally get back to you within a day. If you contact me Monday-Thursday, I will respond within 24 hours. I will also reply during weekends, but I might be a little bit slower.
