Chemistry 2 Class Pact
What you can expect of Dr. Cox:
I will be actively involved in helping you learn and guide you in learning throughout the class and semester (in education lingo, this is called Intrusive Teaching - I don't wait for you to ask me a question, I try to approach you to provide help 😀 )
I will make the lecture videos published and on available on Canvas two weeks early
I will do my best to create a welcoming and supportive learning environment where questions are encouraged.
I will always respond to your emails within 24 hrs Sunday through Friday and return graded assignments with feedback within 7 days.
If you happen to miss a Lab class or miss a quiz or exam, please let me know as soon as possible and I will do my best to schedule a make-up for you. Make-up Quizzes and Make-up Exams are always possible but due to Lab room constraints (other chemistry labs use the same lab room as us), Make-up Experiments may not always be possible.
What will be expected of you:
I always watch all of the assigned lecture videos on a weekly basis and turn in all of the homework assignments on a weekly basis
I do all practice quiz problems carefully and on time using the textbook and notes but am careful to make sure I understand and remember my answers.
I study the notes from lecture actively before taking the Weekly Quizzes and then try to take the quiz without opening my notes or book, first, but then double check a few questions if I have time
I work on the Wednesday Report before the Lab class and then I try to work on chemistry assignments for the full 3 hours of the Monday & Wednesday Lab classes every time to complete the Lab Report, the next pre-lab, work on the practice quiz, and complete the Reading Points Homework Assignments.
I rework/study any quiz / homework / test questions that I missed to ensure that I understand why I missed them and know the correct answers before the exam.
If I am going to be late for a Lab class or exam or miss a Lab class or exam, I will email Dr. Cox within 24 hrs regarding the missed Lab class or missed to schedule a make-up.
Dr. Cox’s Hints to Success in CHEM 2
Dr. Cox’s Hints to Success in CHEM 2
Read the suggested reading before coming to class. Take notes on the reading and try to summarize the reading in your own words.
DO the suggested homework problems.
Don’t study it. Learn it.
In order to learn, it can be helpful to figure out how you learn best:
Do you feel like you learn better from images or diagrams than from reading text?
Do you learn better from watching videos or short movies than from listening to something being read to you?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions – these can be an important part of the learning process.
Form or join a study group and meet on a regular basis – not just before exams.
Remember that chemistry is not a spectator sport – you have to immerse yourself into the game, learn all the rules, and actually play a few innings, putting forth your best effort, in order to win.
What to expect in Chemistry with Dr. Cox (Teaching Philosophy)
I love to have fun almost as much as I love science, and past students have commented that I'm always in an “excited state.” Expect an inclusive digital classroom atmosphere where you are encouraged to participate, talk, throw out answers, get some right, and get some wrong, but most of all continue to keep trying and learning (LEARNING). There will be weekly discussion boards and Study Group Selfie extra credit opportunities to allow you to get to know your classmates (also known as professional networking) (COMMUNITY). In the lecture videos, I use side-by-side note-taking, drawings, videos, animations, analogies, and other tips and tricks to help make challenging concepts more digestible. And as your instructor, I strive to make the class an entertaining, interactive, participatory environment to keep students engaged in the material. One can expect weekly quizzes so that I can provide feedback to you on where they are progressing or where you might be struggling (SUPPORT). Weekly practice quizzes are provided to prepare you for the quizzes and practice exam sessions are also held in prep for exams (SUPPORT). I am also interested in connecting with you on a personal level (INDIVIDUAL DIVERSITY) and helping you achieve your goals.
Before coming to Butte College, I spent several years working and conducting ice core research in Antarctica and Greenland (the picture on the left is from Antarctica).
I also enjoy all aspects of science and science talks - the image on the right is when I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson - a famous astrophysicist.
