Software

The Intro and Intermediate (UCINET) courses use the UCINET software package, (along with Excel) while the Intermediate (R) and Stochastic courses use R. It is strongly recommended that you install these before starting the workshop as all of the courses are hands-on and if you can't get the software to run, you will miss out.

Important note about dual screens: Hands-on learning of software can be tricky online (in our case, using Zoom). In one window, you will have the instructor typing and clicking on menus. In other windows, you will be interacting with the software on your machine. If you don't have two screens or one really wide one, this becomes very difficult. We strongly recommend having two screens, which could be two monitors on one computer, or two computers, or a computer and a tablet, etc.

UCINET

The UCINET package (which includes NetDraw) runs on Windows only. If you have a Mac, you must install a Windows emulator such as Parallels, or VMware Fusion, or Oracle's VirtualBox (which is free). Note you will then have to install Windows (most universities will provide that for free), and Excel (ditto). In the past, people could also run UCINET on WINE, but that is no longer true.

Or, use a PC for this workshop.

BTW, the UCINET package is not free, but it does run for 90 days without a registration code.

Additional notes:

• Make sure you have version 6.747 or later. If not, download the latest version from here:

  • https://sites.google.com/site/ucinetsoftware/download

  • On that page, click the red "download" button . This will download a package that will install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of UCINET. (We will then use the 32-bit version in the workshop)

• After installing, you might want to look at the document Setting up Ucinet

R and R packages

• R is used in the Intermediate (R) module for general network analysis, and in the Stochastic module for running ERGM and “RSiena” (http://cran.r-project.org/). You should have current versions of R and R Studio installed on your computer

• Specific packages (RSiena, statnet/sna and others) will best be downloaded from the internet at the start of the course (to ensure everyone has the same version!). Detailed instructions will follow by email about a week before the start of class.
