Linguistics On a Mission

Our work is not just about teaching a language; it's about providing the tools and confidence to engage in a wider range of life opportunities for emergent bilingual learners in the United States

Mission of the project

This project was initiated from my own experience as an immigrant learning English as a second language in the United States. I migrated to the US from Peru at age 7 with my mother, having not known a single word of English. Spanish is my native language, and upon arriving in the US I experienced culture shock as language became a significant barrier. I faced challenges communicating and integrating into my new community and school system. My goal with this project is to help reduce the difficulties that other immigrants and English language learners may face by developing accessible and engaging resources. Through contextualized conversation practice and real-world scenario simulations, the project aims to empower adults by building their confidence and skills to communicate effectively in English. By drawing from my own journey, and many years working in Bilingual Education Research at SRI international, formerly Stanford Research Institute, I hope to support others navigating a new language and culture.
