From Dr. Fredenberg (saxophone):
As for pieces they should hear-since our instrument hasn't been around as long we don't have four eras of repertoire. For this project I think I want them to maybe listen to chamber music more than our traditional saxophone/piano stuff. I'll just come up with some youtube links and then maybe your students can explore from there.
-One of the first saxophone quartets written specifically for our instruments (SATB) and not arranged was written by Caryl Florio, a pseudonym (real name-William Robjohn). Here is the Kenari Quartet playing both movements: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRkaRpNDe3M and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvtp1mWHthc.
-Another ubiquitous composer and piece in our repertoire is the Quatuor by Alexander Glazunov. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqCfyPT0sV0
A multi-movement neo-romantic work, Glazunov's compositional inspiration. Once your students listen to this performance, there's a score follower version on youtube (not the best performance, but a valuable resource). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DdNtK6vbs0&t=15s
-In between super traditional and contemporary lies Alfred Desenclos' Quatuor. Lots of diminished chords and patterns but a really interesting use of timbre and range of each of the four instruments which your students might find appealing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwK_p2UWpLo
-Two more quartets that are a bit "different" than our traditional repertoire are by Xenakis and Donatoni. If your students are into more contemporary music, I'll include these two pieces (also, they are the subject of my dissertation so I know a bit about them). Donatoni- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5ggF-xzwQ8 Xenakis- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dQkukQ9TMk
-I'll just put a little bit more chamber music here. Obviously your students can listen to both of our albums or anything on our youtube channel to get an idea how the saxophone and bassoon fit together. A couple saxophone things:
Ars by Cristian Lauba for 2 soprano saxophones
Konzerstucke for 2 alto saxophones by Hindemith
Karate by Alex Mincek for 2 tenor saxophones
One mixed chamber piece- Greg Wanamaker's Duo Sonata for alto saxophone and clarinet
Please encourage your students to dive deeper into the libraries of these performers and even composers to try and find any nuggets that they'd like to use in their own writing!
Sorry this was so long, hope it was helpful! -Sean
The Links should work on campus, otherwise, see Blackboard!
From Dr. Javier Rodriguez:
"For bassoon, repertoire is broken down into four categories: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary.
Baroque: Vivaldi wrote 37 concerti for bassoon (to this day, the most by any known composer). There are many to choose from, but some of my favorites are RV 504 in Bb Major or RV 495 in g minor.
Classical and Early Romantic: We have our "Big Three" concertos: Mozart/Weber/Hummel, with the Mozart being asked in most orchestral auditions.
Bassoon Concertos - THEOFANIDIS, C. / HUMMEL, J.N. / MOZART, W.A. / KÕRVITS, T. (Kuuskmann) - link
Bassoon Concertos - WEBER, C.M. von / BITSCH, M. / JOLIVET, A. / CRUSELL, B.H. (Plath, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, McFall) - link
Late Romantic - few solo works came out of this era, one of the few being the Elgar Romance and the Saint-Saens Sonata (my favorite piece for bassoon)
Bassoon Recital: Geoghegan, Karen - HUMMEL, J. / WEBER, C. M. / BERWALD, F. / JACOBI, C. / ELGAR, E. / GERSHWIN, G. - link
SAINT-SAËNS, C.: Oboe Sonata / Bassoon Sonata / POULENC, F.: Oboe Sonata / Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano (Goritzki, Thunemann, Requejo) - link
Contemporary - Many advancements in composition techniques for bassoon have really helped the bassoon become a much much in-demand solo and chamber voice in the past 50 years. The bassoon works of Sofia Gubaidulina (Duo Sonata/Concerto/Quasi Hoquetus) really changed how people view the modern bassoon.
GUBAIDULINA: Bassoon Concerto / Duo Sonata / Quasi hoquetus - link
Bassoon Recital: Sambeek, Bram van - BODDECKER, P.F. / ROSSINI, G. / SAINT-SAENS, C. / GUBAIDULINA, S. (Bassoon Kaleidoscope) - link
Hope this helps!
