Sekolah Dasar Fastabiqul Khairat is the partner school of the Universitas Mulawarman for the Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia Program. It is a private Islamic school in Samarinda, Indonesia headed by the school principal, Mrs. Supriyati.
The school is a prestigious institution with numerous awards and national acknowledgement from being recognized as 2nd Best in Indonesia Quality Learning Culture to being elected as national representative to Australia’s Bridge School Program. It also made a reputation as a school for the elite due to its high standards and aims of developing future Islamic generations equipped with faith and competence.
Further, the school is unique among elementary schools in East Kalimantan as it uses English as a medium of instruction for certain courses such as Bahasa English, Mathematics, and Science. Other notable subjects taught were religious study, geography, civic education, and language courses such as Mandarin and Arabic.
For school culture, SD Fastabiqul Khairat is a child-friendly and bullying-free school. This is evident in its conducive learning environment and the recognition it received from the Samarinda City Government as a “Healthy and Child-Friendly School” in 2019.
Overall, the school focuses on fostering excellence while inculcating Islamic values. Upon immersing in its culture and practices, I can say that it is an institution that ensures delivery of quality education as it puts high regard to the needs, learning, and safety of the pupils.

SD Fastabiqul Khairat is an Islamic elementary school situated in the city of Samarinda, province of East Kalimantan. The institution was established on the year 2007, and continues to operate up to this day, fostering excellence and setting academic standards.
The school prides itself on having high-caliber teachers, a unique curriculum, advanced school learning facilities, engaging extracurricular activities, and an internationalization program.
For the academic year 2023-2024, the school currently had 33 teaching personnel and a total of 582 enrollees. The school organization follows a leadership structure with teachers being managed by a school principal.
Students from grades 1 to 6 are divided into four sections with a population ranging from 20 to 25 pupils. Each section has two managing teachers who facilitate the class. Teaching is departmentalized wherein subjects are taught by different teachers who specialize in specific disciplines. Further, the academic year is divided into two semesters.
The school's academic support system is anchored in the institution’s aim of producing an intelligent, independent, innovative, and national-minded generation. Thus, the school offers various leading programs and extracurriculars.
Some programs and strategies implemented by the school include the adherence to the multilingual method in which English is used as a medium of instruction to selected courses, recognition of multiple intelligences to which learning is inclusive, implementation of student-led conferences to which pupils gain responsibility for their own learning, and smart strategy for classroom setting to which the room is organized for effective learning.
Moreover, the school also offer extracurricular or after-class activities that enhance certain skill and knowledge of pupils. Some of these after-class activities are vocal class, dance class, cooking class, habsyi (traditional instrument), karate, and handicraft class. These are extracurricular activities that pupils may take for the whole semester depending on their liking.
The school focuses on a child-friendly education in which there is a smart allocation of time load, reasonable class size for optimization of pupil’s development inside the classroom, safe and conducive learning environment, and practice of reward and consequence system to manage behavior. The inculcation of Islamic values is also integrated into the teaching and learning process.
The school has a supportive teaching staff. Collaboration is evident in the various activities and programs organized by the school. Aside from teachers who facilitate the teaching and learning process, the school also has shadow teachers. They are teacher-assistant who help and guide slow learners and pupils with special needs during classes.
